Really annoyed by NHS Diabetes prevention program

Much of the NHS advice is wrong, especially when they continue to use the ‘eat well’ plate as an example for diabetics. Low carb is definitely the way forward. I’ve not seen anything that says it is bad for you, in fact quite the opposite. People say you need carbs, and that’s true, but carbs...

Type 2 Does anyone have any experience on metformin?

Definitely low carb. I’ve lost 3.5 stones and my blood tests are fantastic. It isn’t easy, we all love bread and potatoes, but the fewer carbs you eat the better it will be for you. Look for hidden sugar (sugar is carb) in everything you eat or drink. No fruit juice or smoothies. No cakes...

New type 2 - help please

For your long term health you need to cut out as many carbs as possible so very little or nothing of the following: Bread Rice Pasta Potatoes Sugar Flour Obviously anything made with the above is not good for you. Watch out for fruit as much if it is too high in natural sugars (any sugar...

    High glucose levels

Low carb...! All carbs turn to sugar in your body so the fewer you eat the better you will be. No bread, rice, pasta or potatoes, or anything made with them. It goes without saying that this includes breakfast cereals, fruit juice, smoothies, sugar, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, etc. Start doing...

    Hi incoming newbie

Those numbers are far too high, I see that others have mentioned low carb and I agree that this is the best way forward. Avoid as much as you can of: all types of Bread, Rice, Pasta and Potatoes, and anything made with them. Obviously this also includes anything breakfast cereals and anything...

Stressed about going into insulin-Type 2

I’m type 2 (20 years) and I’ve been on insulin for 4 years. My control since I’ve been low carb is fantastic, my insulin doses are very small (4 units of Humalog before meals, and 14 of Abasaglar at night). You’ve got nothing to lose by trying it, and everything to gain. Don’t be afraid of...

    Contour testing kit

YES. I’m type 2 on insulin and I use the Contour. I also record my results in the App MySugr which gives me an estimate of my HbA1c and when I have my blood test twice a year at the Dr’s the result is very very close, so yes, the contour is good.

Type 2 High Hba1c result with good exercise/diet

So I read your reply about what you eat... NOOOOOO! Toast - out Low sugar cranberry juice - not sure, how many carbs Apple - probably not so good Oranges - for me they are very bad Banana - depends on ripeness, closer to green is better Protein bars - most are far too high in carbs, I only eat...

    Missed Doses

Don’t eat any carbs... when I’ve been out and not got my insulin with me I just make sure that I don’t eat any carbs. For one meal that’s ok, longer than that I couldn’t offer any suggestions. I personally might be persuaded to use the insulin, though again I can’t advise you.

Blood sugars 8.4 bedtime & 8.2 on waking?

I’m surprised at these levels if you are low carbing. Are you sure you aren’t consuming other carbs somewhere? Fruit juice and smoothies are both out. Look at all product labels as some bought items can have a lot of carbs in them. Also your liver will deliver glucose to your body in the hours...

    Bread

Asda has Hovis Protein bread (two types) and it is pretty good. About 10g of carbs per slice so I never have more than 2 slices a day.

What can I do with greek yogurt?

I’m not sure what Greek yogurt you bought but this one from Tesco is good. I take a couple of big spoonfuls with a little mixture of fruit and it’s great.

    Recently diagnosed with prediabetes

1 - you can’t go by how you feel. It is only when you are extremely high, or low, that you might just feel a thing (not guaranteed). 2 - you need to cut carbs as much as possible. All carbs will quickly turn to glucose in your blood. Some carbs, such as those in soft drinks, smoothies or fruit...

    Wake Up Call, please advise

Low carb (not zero carb) has to be the way forward, plus exercise. The advice I have for you is to read the labels on products and look at the total carbs figure. Total carbs includes all sugar so it makes the total carb figures easy to review. Nearly all carbs are quickly turned into glucose...

Newly diagnosed , confused and scared

19.5 is way too high, in the short term you should be definitely looking at test results way below 10.0 - I was diagnosed at 9. something! Ideally you should be somewhere near 6.0 I am type 2 on insulin and my advice is to drastically cut down on all carbohydrates (note I said cut down not cut...

    lchf help required

Carbs are your enemy. Most of us love bread and cereals, they are quick and easy to obtain anytime night or day. I was staggered when I actually weighed a portion of cereal as recommended on the box, small like you wouldn't believe, no bigger than a single Kellogs variety packet (and I would...

PR SUCCESSES - GETTING THE WORD OUT THAT LCHF IS THE BEST DIET TO HELP TREAT TYPE 2 DIABETES

Nice article, very well written. I’m type 2 (about 20 years) and I’ve been on insulin for about 3 years. I would like to think that I’m now doing very well, my HbA tests are great, I’ve lost a lot of weight and I now get plenty of exercise. The only negative comment I have is concerning the...

ADVICE ON INSURANCE + Travelling to Netherlands!

4 days???? If you feel well now, and if you have enough supplies of all your regular medication (plus a bit extra) why worry at all? I'm typeII on insulin and I've flown through Birmingham many times and never had an issue, I even left my insulin pen in my carry on bag and it wasn't noticed...

    Disappointing Evening

I'm type 2, have been for about 20 years, and I started using insulin almost 3 years ago. I stopped my metformin recently, I never understood what it was doing for me anyway (and I never had any of the side effects that a lot of people report). For me insulin is great, yes its a pain sometimes...

    Advice on injecting in public

I'm type 2 and injecting insulin so I guess I'm not a lot different in that respect. I try to test and inject in a more quiet surrounding, though I do object to using public or restaurant toilets (disgusting). If I use a recent example I went to dinner at a friends house and as it was about 20...
