    Fluctuating Blood Sugar

Hello, Welcome to the club. There is no need to test on the hour as your GP will soon be onto you for using too many strips. DAFNE recommends to test 4 HOURS AFTER a meal as your body is still absorbing the quick acting insulin. Do not do any corrections if you're high after 2 hours of a...

    How many units?

Ask your DSN about carb counting for yourself, as you need to match the amount of insulin vs the amount of carbs you eat...you need to know what ratio to use and how to vary the ratio for meals and why you need to do so. Ask about the DAFNE course and please don't bother with 2 hour testing ...

    Spiking

Hi Charlie, When do you test after eating your meal? I did DAFNE in 2013 and was told to test AFTER 4 HOURS because most quick acting insulins are still working during 2-4 hours. If you test after 2 hours, it all depends on how quickly YOUR BODY reacts to insulin, forget about the 2 mmols...

If you were to walk into McDonalds...

To be accurate on the carb counting, which I do, you need to know what ratios to use. For me I use 1 unit Apidra for 4.5 grams carbs generally. I sometimes vary this ratio from meal to meal depending on what I plan do do later on....activities.etc To find the ratio it's a bit of trial and...

    Ketones

Hi Charlie, For you to have ketones your BSs must be high for a while. I'm type 1 and use the Glucomex LX plus meter which reads ketones but I don't concentrate on ketones...it's your BSs you need to lower and the ketones will go away. What are BSs numbers before and 4 hours after meals and...

    Advice on testing

It is great that you have bought your own meter. The cost of your strips isn't too bad. I am type 1 and have used meters with strips costing less than £10.00 for 50. I test every 4 hours usually as per DAFNE. If my ratios are OK my insulin usually takes about 4 hours to work but don't get...
