Honeymoon period - no insulin needed today?

You'll enjoy the DAFNE course. I've just done the ICE course, I enjoyed it to be fair although I'd already thrown myself into carb counting quite early on. I'm not sure if I'm enjoying eating what I like. I'd got quite into measuring, calculating and bolusing. I'd been regularly between 4 and 7...

Honeymoon period - no insulin needed today?

I'll contact my endocrinologist tomorrow, He's perhaps the best one at the clinic to speak with. Up until this week I was able to go to bed at 5.9 and get up almost the same. For some reason my pancreas must be having a final fling! Just tested my bloods again and they are 6.6. Remarkable really...

Honeymoon period - no insulin needed today?

I last took lantus on Friday Evening. I'm scared to take it if I'm honest. I'm waking up at normal levels, and during the day today with no basal or bolus I'm still going low. I've just eaten a meal an hour and half ago. I even had dessert to see what would happen. I was 5.1 before the meal...

Honeymoon period - no insulin needed today?

You're right, it is a comfort to know that you're not alone, if feels that way sometimes. I haven't taken any insulin last night or today and yet earlier I was having to take glucose as I'd gone to 3.2 mmol/l. All very confusing! No doubt I'll get on top of it and it will change again! :) Steve

Honeymoon period - no insulin needed today?

Hi, It's a relief to know that someone else has experienced the same thing. Your reply has helped me to decide. I'm going to stop my basal and then just take a reduced bolus tomorrow. I'll do plenty of testing to see what the effects are. I don't mind so much having to combat hypos during the...

Honeymoon period - no insulin needed today?

Hi all, I was diagnosed type1 late in 2013. At first I was started on 26 units of Lantus per day and a 2 unit to 10g of Apidra. Over the past weeks i've gradually had to reduce this as I'v had several frequent hypos day and night. I'm now on just 6 units of Lantus and a ratio of 1 unit of...

    Diagnosed type 1 yesterday

Hi Kerry and welcome, As some of the others have said, you'll be fine. I was diagnosed in December. In all honesty it's nowhere as bad as you may think. You'll read some horror stories ( as I did) but please remember that medicine today, in particular insulin is far more advanced than it was 10...

End of honeymoon? Producing own insulin?

I"m also in a honeymoon period. If I'm lucky I can have three stable weeks, The first sign of a change is usually an unexplained hype ( circa 2.9 - 3.2 mmol/l) I usually start with adjust my basal. I take mine at 11pm so normally I'll fast from 7pm. Take my basal at 11pm, record bloods at...

    Can't prick my own finger

I know, I decided not to make it a private thing, for the first few days I'd lock myself away when testing or injecting. I don't now. I test or inject wherever I happen to be, In the middle of the city centre, in a restaurant or even when with clients. Most of them are my friends now and know...

    Can't prick my own finger

You do get used to it. A few weeks ago it was a big deal but it soon becomes second nature. Today for instance I was in River Island looking at new jackets and I felt a bit odd so as I was walking around I got my accucheck mobile out and tested on the shop floor without thinking. Nobody batted...

Statins - Good or bad - What's the truth?

I've not had a checkup as yet Noblehead as I've only been diagnosed a short while. I've called the Doctors and I have a telephone consultation booked for tomorrow, I've decided not to take one tonight. Today has been a washout. I'd love to get a no nonsense explanation but even the medical...

Statins - Good or bad - What's the truth?

I might have read too many Robert Harris novels but it almost seems like there is a conspiracy to get as many people as possible on them. There are reports that they reduce your chance of heart attack by 40% and yet on the other hand there are frightening figures for people who have had serious...

Statins - Good or bad - What's the truth?

You know, the crazy thing about this is that I haven't had a cholesterol test done since being diagnosed, The last one I had was in 2011 and my cholesterol was 4.1. They just want me to take a Statin as a matter of course it seems.

Statins - Good or bad - What's the truth?

Since being diagnosed, every medical professional that I've come into contact with has said that I need to be on a Statin. Yesterday whilst with my Doctor who I trust implicitly and who isn't one for handing meds out willy nilly, I asked for his opinion. He explained the role of Statins to me...

diagnosed T1 for 5 months and struggling

Hi Steve, Try this http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/listing.asp?M=Main I found this course online as soon as I was diagnosed and it served me well. It'll take you a couple of hours to do the whole course but it'll result in you having a really good grasp of carb counting. I've given this link...

diagnosed T1 for 5 months and struggling

Hi Steve, Welcome, It sounds like you're still experiencing the honeymoon effect. It can last anything from weeks to even years. Basically it just means that you may still have active beta cells in your pancreas that are randomly producing insulin. This can cause a hypo if you've also injected...

    New type 1......down :-(

Hi Kirsten, Sorry to hear about the rough time you've been having. It's good that you've decided to post on here. We all have something in common and it helps. I was diagnosed late last year too in a very similar way. I can only second what others have said on here about carb counting. It'll...
