    Low carb sweet fat bomb

Packet of pork scratchings? Not really sweet, but very tasty and very filling!

Type 1: How to tell dvla you are diabetic

Your DSN should have advised you at diagnosis. If you weren't told, how could you have known? It depends on the type of insulin (oral or injecting) as to whether your license is affected. I had to go directly onto injections as my hba1c was dangerously high, so my licence was changed to a...

Another win to chalk up for LCHF

I managed to get through last Christmas without issue and without needing insulin thanks to LCHF. Could be honeymoon, could be more. I'm happy now with LCHF for 20 months, and only needing insulin when having a high carb meal - which I tend to avoid; why upset the applecart? Interestingly, I...

    STILL ALIVE!! Dr Bernstein...wow

The head pain I had was so severe it affected my vision, no drugs would clear it and simply made me 'fuzzy'. Watching TV or reading was out, and bright lights a nightmare. You need to make a decision and alter your path in life. Either stay as you are with the pain and suffering with your...

The low carb message is getting heard.

Excellent news. I too have found pubs and restaurants keen to help where they can, and will amend the meal to suit without extra cost.

    Type 1 LCHF diet

@ jonniey Have a look at the Low Carb forum at what others are eating. You need to make than conscious decision about the value of good health. I too was concerned about the cost of going low carb, but have found it actually cheaper once through the first month, as the fats keep you fuller for...

    STILL ALIVE!! Dr Bernstein...wow

@jonniey Your pain issues is most likely due to your high sugars. When mine were in my high teens, I was rushed into hospital for a suspect head tumour due to the intense pain. However, on managing to get the sugars back down, (and stay down) the pain went altogether. Both beer and coke have a...

    Tight foreskin!

Very common problem for diabetics. Some good advice given above. I find the key being to keep your BG's as tight as possible (4-7), and the problem stays away without surgery. In the interim, I found steroid cream (Daktacort) would help clear up any outbreaks. Don't be shy - see your GP or...

    Type 2 Dry skin

@Lizzie61 Nip to the chemist and get some Diprobase ointment (not cream). If my BGs go over 7, then my skin on hands and feet will dry and split - this stuff is magic and will sort the issue and any soreness within a couple of hours. I've got some cotton gloves and cotton socks from Wilco's (v...

    Type 1 LCHF diet

I'm T1.5, have followed a LCHF lifestyle for the past 21 months; never felt better than I do now. I have loads of energy, BG's nice and stable. Providing I keep each meal below 40g carbs I need NO insulin at all. Bearing in mind I had an hba1c of 101 at diagnosis just over 2 years ago, and had...

Honeymoon coming to an end and time for Insulin I suspect

I was put onto 36u as a mix of Levemir and Novorapid at diagnosis (hba1c of 101). After 7 months of hypos and hypers I decided I needed to do something more than the medics, and followed a lchf lifestyle, which gave me the energy to follow an even more active lifestyle. Within a few weeks I was...

Is a Low Carb Diet Sustainable to Manage Type 1 Diabetes

I've been lchf for the last 18 months; 16 of those have been insulin-free (bar the occasional higher carb meal-out/take-away). My usual meals are double-portion protein with lots of above-ground veg. This keeps my BG's in the 4-5-6 range. No more raging hypers or hypos, and very easy to keep...

    LCHF for t1

LCHF for nearly 18 months and loving it. I generally have around 50g carbs daily over my 4 meals, BG's are in the 4/5/6 range throughout the day, with the exception of the dawn phenomenon which can raise it to mid-7's, but quickly comes down with a breakfast of berries, nuts, double cream. Have...

Very happy with LCHF but my cholesterol has shot up.

Hi @ Countryside_Yoyo This all sounds very familiar! My GP put me on statins for my elevated cholesterol, but they made me pretty ill. I told him I would get it down myself, without any more statins. Continued with the lchf lifestyle; I have between 40-60g carbs per day. I doubled my...

    Type 1: What to eat?

Hi @Char1994 Firstly your mind will be on overload at the minute, so don't panic about taking it all in. I remember being so ill at diagnosis (hba1c of 101), that my DSN simply put me straight onto a fixed dose of insulin to start to get those levels down. I was told that my sugars were too...

    12 Months From Diagnosis. Type1.

I found cereals, bread and potatoes to be the main cause of highs and subsequent lows. Since swapping to a lchf lifestyle, I've stopped all those hypos and hypers, and my a1c is nicely down to 45 (from 101 at diagnosis). Try swapping your cereal for berries, nuts and double cream; I was...

Type 1: Sore finger tips - not taking insulin

Hi @nessa1970 As others have already said, if you switch to the sides of your fingers, it is a less painful area as there are less nerve endings. Also if you ensure your hands are warm before you test, this will help the flow. If you find a finger struggles to supply, leave it alone for a week...

    Issues with recognising hypos

Hi @hollieb Ask your DSN about when your next DAFNE course is on near you. This will help you identify the hypos as well as loads of other useful info.

    Car insurance and Type 1

I've not encountered any car insurance issues with my 3 year restricted licence. As previously said, there was no increase mid-term when I informed them, and no increase at renewal. I'm also a 2nd driver for my daughters insurance, and she wasn't penalised for it either.
