    How do you manage exercise?

Howie, You are more in danger of going high the way you're doing it. The danger is that with no fast acting insulin circulating (unless it's less than 4 hours since injecting), you eating some snacks and with your body reacting to exercise in its natural way, ie. releasing glycogen from the...

    Blood Pressure

Thanks everyone for your answers. Looking back at yesterday, I think there were a number of factors at play, several of which may have raised my bp: Annoyed at having to wait ages for my appointment. Slightly anxious about discussion I was about to have with doctor re. possible depression...

    Blood Pressure

Hi All, I'm going to ask a question about blood pressure and Type 1 diabetics. Before I get to that, here are my stats to give you some background: Age 33. Height 1.91m(6'4" in old money) Weight 82kg (about 13.5 stone). Diagnosed 3 years, Hba1C 8.1, Cholesterol 3.8. I haven't drunk alcohol...

    Levels for a NON diabetic?

If you're worried over these numbers, I'd hate to think what else you worry about. Your life must be one permanent worry. If you don't want to see your GP you could always phone up the diabetes clinic at your local hospital. Go to the hospital website, and search for 'diabetes'. There are a...

    Alcohol tips!?

The safest (and in my opinion healthiest) option if you're going to go and get battered on a stag do, is to make sure you eat before you go to sleep. Drinking large amounts of alcohol will almost certainly result in a hypo (but I think you've already done the reading on that) so the answer is...

    ketones

You can buy ketone strips from a pharmacy if you're really worried. I'd try to get your bg levels down first using corrective insulin doses. Do you inject with every meal? Try and eat the same size portions of the same size food, i.e. two pieces of toast with butter, every day and work out...

    Control problems and generally down

Hi CJ, Some very interesting points there! I haven't been on the DAFNE course, but the more I hear about it, the more I want to go on it. The numbers you stated seem very reasonable to me and are the kind of ranges I'm aiming for. When I say I'm having 2 or 3 hypos a week, the reading rarely...

    Control problems and generally down

Thanks Dillinger, A lot of the stuff you said makes great sense... especially the 'green vegetables' bit. That's a particular strong point with me... love the salads and veges at meals. I use Lantis for my long acting insulin. I've not really considered discussing this with my consultant - I...

    Control problems and generally down

Thanks Ken - can't believe I haven't followed up on the BDEC site before. I've had it recommended before, but never got as far as actually doing anything.

    Control problems and generally down

Hi All, Has anyone else gone through what I'm about to describe? (I think I probably know the answer, but would like to get it off my chest). I think my bg levels are too high! 12 months ago, at my last DN appointment, they told me I was having too many hypos - it was about 3 per week. I was...

    Weight gain

Yep - I went from 11.5 stone average weight to 13.5 - all good if you're going to the gym and trying to build muscle, but not much good if you're not intending to put on that much. Just remember that you're probably eating more frequently now you're diabetic. I know I never used to have...

    I'm trying animal insulin

Am waiting keenly for the results. Do you have any decent links/articles on the subject? I wouldn't know the difference between animal insulin and anything else. Go on... educate me

    What's the average HbA1c result?

While it's not an average value (but possibly based on averages, as quite a lot of recommendations are), my doctor also said that 7.5 would be an ideal level for a t1 diabetic. With my last hba1c being 8.0, he was possibly giving me something realistic to aim at, but it is a number that comes...

    Carb counting in restaurants

Hi CJ, Great website 8) - can hearing that get tedious? ... I doubt it. Have you tried contacting ASK? ... I can't find anything on their website. Also, the subway link seems to be a dead one :( Keep up the good work! Sam.

first hba1c results in a few weeks

Yep - don't beat yourself up if they come back less than perfect. Some of us take years to get control, and even then, it's not always at the level we'd like. You'll find an 'always-learning' attitude very useful!

Just been told I should only test twice a day.

I'm type 1 and test on average 2 or 3 times a day. Always before bed and usually at one other time during the day. I vary the time at which I test so I can get an idea of my control level. If exercising, I always test before exercise. Regarding correcting bg levels with your mealtime...

Please sign by midnight tonight... obtaining insulin pumps

It's never that bad Rachel! Stop the negative cycle, keep a diary of all your activities, food eaten, insulin doses and you'll feel better immediately. You'll be amazed how much better your control gets by just monitoring what you're eating - guess it makes you think more about everything that...

has any type 1 ever managed to lose weight while on Insulin

It doesn't harm - and surely can only be positive when carried out at the correct intensity for the the individual. And used in conjunction with a controlled diet (whatever control you prefer, e.g. low-carb, low calorie, low portion... etc) will enable the subject to lose weight in a controlled way.
