    Cycling on type. 2

I caught part of a really interesting radio 4 item on diets for runners today. A respected doctor who had written acclaimed books on the value of a high carbohydrate diet for long distance runners has now realised he was wrong. He now advocates a low carb, high-fat diet for runners. He has...

    Soused Herrings with a difference

Oddly, I tried it with Mackeral for the first time tonight. The bones are a bit tougher than with herrings, so you have to pick them out rather than just chew and swallow them, but they taste really good. I can't think of a better way to eat oily fish.

    Soused Herrings with a difference

It's a good job my mum's not alive to hear you say that. She would have boxed your ears. Yes, the Scandinavians eat them raw, but this is Britain and here we cook things properly.

    Soused Herrings with a difference

When I was a lad I loved the soused herrings my mum used to cook. She soaked them in vinegar and baked them in the oven. When I was diagnosed and found this site I realised that herrings are a fantastic food for diabetics, so I soused some herrings in the oven. They tasted great, but my wife...

Celebrating hitting target of 3 stone lost thanks to LCHF way of eating and forum support

Well done you. I was lucky to find this site immediately I was diagnosed and have got things back under control in just three months. It shows it works doesn't it?

    Struggling to get bloods down

Hi and welcome. Firstly, stop worrying. Stress just pushes up your blood sugar. An HBa1c of 66 is quite high, but there is lots you can do to get it down. It will take time and a lot of hard work so be prepared to play the long game if you want to get your blood glucose into the normal...

    Aches/ Fatigue

I have to agree with you Resurgam. Prior to my diagnosis, I ate fruit like my life depended on it (not bananas as I hate them). As soon as I started testing I realised that fruit is a huge no, no for me. Even one small satsuma caused a big BG spike. We are all different, but fruit is clearly...

    Aches/ Fatigue

Andy. I wouldn't threat too much about early morning high BG levels. As I understand it the morning level is usually the last to fall as you move into a more healthy lifestyle. Be patient and you should find it will fall. It takes time.

    Advice needed

Hi and welcome. I've tried to tag you to get the welcome pack, but it won't work. I'm sure one of the others will help with this. 38 is in the non-diabetic range, so I wouldn't worry as stress raises blood glucose levels. I would pop along to see your GP though. There are lots of other tests...

just seen DN for first time

That's spot on Manhattan. I thought that the conditions I had were just bad luck; a feature of my age. Clearly they weren't. Now that I am following a healthy lifestyle all my other health issues have materially improved. I hope the same happens for you.

I agree with everything you say except the comments on exercise Ringi. I find that exercise is the best way for me to tackle BG spikes. I can get a spike down quickly by spending 15 minutes walking briskly or 10 minutes on my bike. You don't need a gym either. Walk up and down the stairs at...

Have you tried roughage for your diverticulitis? The softer your stools the less likely you are to suffer (I don't have it but my brother does and it worked for him)

Ah Manhattan, I think I can give you some further pointers then. I have had atrial fibrillation since my mid 20's. It got a lot worse two years ago and I was put on 5 mg Bisoprolol a day. Bisoprolol is proven to raise BG, but I wasn't told that. Since I have been on the LCD the fibrillation...

I don't eat fruit and limit the amount of berries I eat too. There is nothing in fruit that you can't get from low carb vegetables.

I was diagnosed last November with an HBa1c of 53 too. I'm 63 years old. I've gone for a very low carb diet. Basically, I avoid all high carb foods, sugar and alcohol.. I exercise a lot; at least an hour of strenuous to moderate exercise every day. I just got my HBa1c results after three...

    Newish T2

Be careful when cooking with olive oil. It can break down into some pretty nasty things if it gets very hot. Butter or lard are safer for high-temperature cooking.

    Toast for Breakfast yah!

I have peanut butter on celery. I think it's yummy, but I realise not everyone likes celery. It's pretty good on fennel too, but easier to spread on celery.:)

    Apparently I am cured!!!!

It's not really my GP that I was criticising, but rather the system that leads them to need to put funding first. My GP practice follows a strict 10 minute appointment regime. If you need more than 10 minutes you have to make another appointment and appointments aren't easy to get. My...

    Apparently I am cured!!!!

For many years my GP was a partner at the practice. It was almost impossible to get him to agree to a referral or tests. We have now been switched to a junior GP and wow what a difference. I guess he gets a salary, so it doesn't cost him when he spends the practice money, whereas the partners...

    Reversed diabetes

I do think we need to be mindful of the science of diabetes when we talk of 'cured' or 'in remission'. There is much that we still don't know about the causes of diabetes and of course, there are many different forms and degrees of the disease. Everyone is different. Some of us no doubt have...
