    Carb confused

Hello and welcome, Yes, carbs need to be cut/restricted, but to find out what your meals do to your blood sugars you need to buy a glucose meter. GP's won't supply them unless you are on strong diabetes medication, which of course you are not. You can test yourself before you eat and again 2...

    Feeling awful

Hi, and welcome to the forum, I agree with what the others said as regards high blood glucose levels being the most likely cause of your symptoms, and the Metformin being the cause of any tummy upsets. I won't repeat what has been said, but would like to say that you cannot rely on Metformin...

    Sciatica

Have a look at this https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sciatica/symptoms-causes/syc-20377435#:~:text=Sciatica%20refers%20to%20pain%20that,one%20side%20of%20your%20body. Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, usually by a herniated disk in your spine or by an...

COVID-19: are you wearing a mask?

In November 1918 my hubby's grandfather and one of his sons died of the influenza during the pandemic. They died on the same day. The son had been in the trenches in France. I started to do a bit of research about this years ago, and these are the notes I made. In the spring of 1918 large...

What are people thinking about a second lockdown?

This is all a shambles and unbelievable illogical. Today, Liverpool (among other towns) is under stricter restrictions. It has the highest rate of infections in the country. All well and good. However, my borough has been under the exact same restrictions, no differences, for about 2 weeks...

    remission

To be considered in remission you have to show non-diabetic blood sugar levels without the aid of medication (except possibly Metformin) over a certain period of time. The period of time varies from one GP to the next. GP's rely on the HbA1c test to see who has non-diabetic levels or not. We can...

I want to come Off statins

I agree that total cholesterol of 2.5 is very low. It is under the normal range as quoted in my lab reports. The standard range is 3 to 5 (but they like diabetics to be 3 to 4). It also means that your good cholesterol (HDL) must be quite low. My HDL is higher than your total. You really need...

    Flu vaccination

I have been invited every year since I became entitled due to being 60 (now 72) as has my husband. We went for ours last Monday. We both had the pneumonia jab as soon as we were old enough and were told it was a once a lifetime jab. I do believe those will certain illnesses can have repeated...

Covid and Work, Covid Advice and General Chat

I only have to look through my front window or unplug my ears to realise there are up to 12 children playing together on bikes and scooters outside on the road after school until dusk and at weekends. Children from at least 6 if not more households, some junior school age and some secondary...

Covid and Work, Covid Advice and General Chat

I very much doubt that being on unpaid leave will entitle you to UC. You are still employed. I believe the advisor you spoke to is correct, but easier to confirm this if you ring your local job centre and ask to speak to a work coach. My daughter is one of these work coaches.

COVID-19: are you wearing a mask?

My masks are surgical quality and fluid resistant. Single use. If you wash them they lose the resistance. According to what I read and what my audiologist told me, they have to be fluid resistant to be of any effect at all. Ordinary home made ones are unlikely to be fluid resistant. Same as...

What are people thinking about a second lockdown?

Someone on TV earlier suggested the govt should set up a website where we could enter our postcode and get our own local rules. That seems like a good plan to me. It must be a nightmare for you.

What are people thinking about a second lockdown?

I got a distinct feeling that the "odd couple" statements were aimed mainly at the young, warning them of the dangers of passing the virus on to others more vulnerable. Boris is expected to give his statement at about 12-30, but not confirmed by Boris. I supose it depends on what happens in...

What are people thinking about a second lockdown?

I thought it was common knowledge that after a person has been infected and recovered fully, he cannot pass the virus on BUT dead remnants of bits and bobs of it can and do get picked up on tests, and come out positive when that person can no longer infect others. No links I'm afraid, but it has...

Finger prick testing: things I wish I'd known from the start

Yes, very good comments, but much depends on the meter and type of strips. For example, I use an Accuchek Mobile meter in which the test strips are fully enclosed in a cartridge of 50 tests inside the meter., so there is no handling of the strip. The correct way with these meters is to dangle...

Do you add salt, magnesium, potassium to your diet?

I am a great believer in obtaining all the minerals and vitamins from what I put in my mouth, and rely on my 6 monthly blood tests and lack of deficiency symptoms to tell me I need supplements. I have always added salt to food for flavour - in cooking and on the plate, and believe I am not salt...

    2 Strawberries = 2g of carbs

Blueberries are not at all good for me. Worse than strawberries, raspberries etc. It is always advisable to eat fruit with cream/yogurt as part of a meal and not in isolation. Even my nurse told me this way back when I was first diagnosed in 2014.
