I struggle to test my glucose levels...

Hi Ben Yeah, I used to HATE doing the tests but it's become a routine thing now, it's a bit like wearing a watch, it serves a purpose. Well, OK, I still dislike wearing a watch but I do check my blood glucose 4-5 times a day! ;) What kind of meter do you have? Some of them have really good...

Hypos - how do you deal with them & what are the first signs

Jelly babies - bought them...and had them today(for the first time ever) today as blood sugar was low. Trouble: I like them too much!! I could have the whole back sooo easily! Are Jelly babiesand jelly beans the same apart from the shape? I feel a bit stupid asking this but I've never had them...!

Hypos - how do you deal with them & what are the first signs

I am glad to hear someone else experiences the 'depressions' too! I have exactly the same, extremely intense feelings of 'why bother' or 'what's the point'. Nowadays I know it's a hypo on its way so I just go and eat something and then I'm happy again. :D

Hypos - how do you deal with them & what are the first signs

Just to add to the above, the couple and the dogs did not exist at all of course.

Hypos - how do you deal with them & what are the first signs

Some of the things that have happened to me really do give me the giggles now but of course it wasn't funny at the time... Has any of you hallucinated when having a hypo? Well I have!! We were on holiday with my ex and I saw this couple, with two dogs, and the woman was in skin tight jeans bent...

Hypos - how do you deal with them & what are the first signs

Wow - three months moonstone, that's great for you :) I have to get jelly babies. My doctor, diabetes nurse or any other professional has ever suggested those or the GlucoGel, I am annoyed about that. I've only learnt about those here today. Shows you why these kinds of forums are so important.

Hypos - how do you deal with them & what are the first signs

That's interesting what you say about chocolate - it works very quickly for me. A whole Mars bar has about as many calories as a meal so that'd be a bit too much. Honey is also good but if I'm really low, getting a spoon out and opening the jar is too difficult. And hell yeah I do get the...

Low carb diet and Type 1 Diabetes

Thanks for that Fergus, glad to hear others have experienced it too, I probably wasn't doing so badly with my experiments then! Last week, I ate two pieces of toast bread (wholemeal) for lunch with ham, cheese and salad. Then in the afternoon 2-3 biscuits. In the evening, meals were meat and...

Hypos - how do you deal with them & what are the first signs

Thought I'd start this topic as there are a few people here who have been recently diagnosed...Also for myself, although I've had diabetes for 29 years, I am sure I could learn much more from others. Also interested to hear what are the first signs you experience. Mine vary - sometimes the...

Low carb diet and Type 1 Diabetes

Don't you get massive cravings for bread and potato? I'm asking because I was experimenting a bit last week and today I was just DYING for bread, bread, bread and bread! And also potatoes, well, chips, and scones! Shopping at M&S food department was a nightmare. Obviously maybe I had too little...

Low carb diet and Type 1 Diabetes

Hi moonstone, I've got type 1 diabetes too (diagnosed 29 years ago) and live in London, if you want to chat about how to deal with it at work and elsewhere, please feel free to send me a PM. I don't actually know anybody else who has type 1, and I live on my own too...and sometimes it is hard...

Low carb diet and Type 1 Diabetes

Posted a long post here and then for some reason it disappeared!! Anyway, fergus, I'd be interested to hear how long you have been on low carbohydrate diet, and how you first learnt about it. This has probably been discussed elsewhere but I'd also like to hear what you eat on a typical day...I...

    To those on Lantus

Hi Jude Have you ever kept a food diary? If not, maybe it would be a good idea to do that for a few weeks. When I saw my diabetes nurse about the stomach problems I was having, she pointed out that often it is only the following day that problems occur when we have eaten something that our...

    To those on Lantus

Hi Jude Have any health professionals ever mentioned to you that diabetes can also contribute to, or even cause, IBS like symptoms? If your blood glucose levels vary a lot, your system will struggle to digest food. That can cause diahorrea/indigestion/wind/pain etc, just like IBS does. For...

    regimes and ratios

It's interesting that none of my doctors have ever said anything about my dosages. I weigh 57kg and am normal weight, my weight's been stable for years so in that sense the dosage would seem to be correct. I am not sure if I could do the low carb thing because of my kidney problems - I am...

    regimes and ratios

Hi fergus Yes I am a roadie as well. Not a semi-pro or anything and during the week it's mainly commuting. Have not trained much in Nov/Dec due to a freelance project I'm working on, but I've set up a 'female only' cyclist group and it looks like we're doing a group ride next weekend. Lycra...

    regimes and ratios

In terms of food, I got diabetes when I was five and back then, the diet and portions were really strict, and I learnt to eat very healthily. I never eat white bread unless it's forced upon me, lots of fruit and veg and lean meat. My only sins are the occasional pizza and pasta and fish & chips...

    regimes and ratios

Hi totsy Well I don't produce any insulin at all, and I have quite a few complications including high blood pressure and kidney problems which could contribute to it. I do however exercise a lot - daily commute to and from work and longer rides at weekends plus gym three times a week. But yeah...
