Thanx both for taking the time to reply. My gut feeling pretty much follows yours that this almost certainly isn't type 1. Tests wise I don't think they could've made any other diagnosis - i was riding at 20+ a couple of weeks after a heavy birthday session (lots of rum and little sleep)...
