    Car insurance premiums

Good news ! I managed to get a decent quote from kwikfit, same cover as I had before and £150 cheaper than last years premium and a total saving of over £700 on this years renewal from direct line. I got a quote from Direct Line for just my wife to drive the car (£400) and to have me as a named...

    Car insurance premiums

Hi all, I've recently had my car insurances renewal through and was dismayed to find it had increased by over £600.00. I was diagnosed with type 1 in May 2009 and informed my insurance company straight away and was not charged any extra premium. I renewed may policy last August with only a...

    Individual assessment for diabetic drivers

How many of you who have voiced an opinion on diabetes and driving are, or were professional drivers? I’m not talking about doing a bit of driving on the side to earn extra cash or the daily commute to work, but driving for a living where your family, mortgage, your whole life depends on it. I...

    Job discrimination because of diabetes

Having read all the posts in this thread I now feel its time to voice my own opinions and assumptions. Discrimination of any kind in the workplace is illegal. How would anyone feel if they were told that they couldn’t do a particular job because they were too fat? Driving a lorry or bus for...

    Individual assessment for diabetic drivers

Having just read Annex III to EU Directive 91/439/CEE it seems nothing will change. The working group has stated that the new "criteria should appear in guidelines rather than in the law". So it seems that legislation will be left to each individual member state. Back to the job centre then !!

    Individual assessment for diabetic drivers

I saw the following article in Commercial Motor magazine & found it very interesting. As a former lorry driver who lost his license & livleyhood when i became insulin dependant I welcome this move, hopefully I might even get my licences back. Drivers who have been banned from driving...

    Time for insulin

Thanks for your support Colin, I always knew the time would come when I had to go onto insulin. Driving has been such a big part of my life, I even had my own trucks for 7 years. There are plenty of people worse off than myself, but knowing that still does'nt make it any easier. Maybe I...

    Time for insulin

Thanks for the info, the main problem being a 50%+ drop in pay ! In the current climate there are around 250 applications per HGV vacancy, proberbly more for vans/light commercials. I'm aware that diabetes is covered by Disabilities Discrimination Act but as a former employer myself I know that...

    Time for insulin

Hi all, I was diagnosed 2 years ago with mody at the age of 40 (a little late I know, but I did the manly thing & ignored the symptoms for years). I was told I had to go on insulin straight away but as a HGV driver this was not an option. Anyway 2 years on after trying gliclazide, metformin &...
