Help: Moving to England (London) with T1 and Insulin Pump

I’m on a pump (Omnipod), and they are supported by many diabetes services in the UK. The GP registration should be fairly quick, given your partner’s medical status. They will be able to request a referral to an insulin pump service when they see the GP. Not all diabetes services are able to...

Freestyle libre sensor, causing shoulder impingement?

I don’t know about the reaction to Libre, but both my shoulders have suffered with Adhesive Capsulitis. I had been told it was due to poor control on FB groups and such, but my consultant stated that was not correct. He sees just as many diabetics with good control as diabetics with poor...

    Lyumjev insulin and pumps

My experience was that Lyumjev made my sites sore. They were not infected, just sore. Apply a new pod and the soreness moved. Having discussed it with my diabetes team, we think it was the vasodilator that caused it. I used FiAsp when first using Omnipod Eros as I was using that when on MDI...

    Omnipod 5

I’m not sure where you live @richyb , but I would get a referral to a different pump service. No DSN for over a month just isn’t acceptable. I agree that there is training required for the diabetes teams, but to have no support for that length of time just wouldn’t be on for me.

In you experience does Metformin cause you pancreatitis? Odd situation combo type 3c + type 2?

Hi @Peanut234 , you mention that you’re working with/under a gastro? I’m neither a DSN nor a consultant, but I understand that Metformin can produce side effects that make gut symptoms worse. My consultant thought about putting me on it but then said he wouldn’t as it would exacerbate the...

    Omniipod dash fell off

I think it’s probably the same as the Libre - if one gets into the shower shortly after applying a Libre sensor it’s likely to fall off. It takes time for the acrylic adhesive to get to full strength. Similarly, get into the shower shortly after applying a pod and it’s likely to fall off...

    Diabetes and other conditions

If the gp puts you on Metformin, that can exacerbate any gut issues. It can be useful for improving insulin sensitivity, but isn’t normally prescribed for those with IBS.

    New to Tresiba - Flexibility?

I was on Lantus, then Levemir, then Tresiba, and finally Omnipod pump. Lantus is quite short acting, and acts as a short acting insulin if injected accidentally into a vein. Levemir is quite short acting, too, but isn’t sensitive to injecting into veins/capillaries. Tresiba is a really long...

    Prescription hold ups

Very few local pharmacies hold or can obtain insulin pens. The reps leave them with the hospital DSNs, and - in England - it is expected that patients who need new pens will get them from the hospital. My limited experience of Scotland was the same. My former diabetes consultant in Birkenhead...

    Advise how to get pump

Pumping, or Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) doesn’t make it easier, it just makes it different. For one, it’s a steep learning curve as a lot of what one learns for MDI has to be relearned for CSII. It’s a different paradigm. Advantages: - basal insulin can be adjusted for the...

Lantus to Levemir: in need of encouragement

For me, Levemir was much better than Lantus, and Tresiba was much better than Levemir. I had some trouble in sorting out the split in my doses on Levemir. Levemir is one of the shorter acting basal insulins, so splitting the dose is quite common, from what I understand. Tresiba, if you're able...

    Libido vanished/relationship problems

Viagra gives me bad headaches, too. Takes any sparkle out of fun times. At first, I thought it was just coincidence, then I realized. :( Cialis, one of the competitor products, might be better for you? There may be others, too. A conversation with your GP would be the first stop on this...

Poor rating for Freestyle Libre sensors

I have yet to know a sensor off, although I did lose one in the swimming pool earlier this week. It came off within about 5 or ten minutes of me getting in the water. For me, the biggest problem is the variability in accuracy. Some sensors/sites are perfect, others not so good, and some go...

NICE recommends dapagliflozin as type 1 diabetes treatment

I don't understand why this is being prescribed or promoted, given the increased rate of UTIs and thrush that it must cause? As someone whose control was rubbish (and my consultant would probably say still is!), I ended up having a circumcision due to the scarring and tightness that repeated...

Teenage son won't do his insulin

I'd have to ask why he isn't doing all of his own injections? I was diagnosed when aged 12, manual mixing of Actrapid and Monotard, and was doing my own injections before they would let me go home from hospital after diagnosis. Your son needs to become independent, obviously, and so, perhaps...

Breakfast ratio to counteract dawn phenomenon

I can't tick the original posting enough! I'm not convinced that it's dawn phenomenon in my case, but my blood glucose seems to rise on working days when I need to get up, and not on non-working days when I don't. If I were to increase my ratio to 1u to 5g carbs, I'd go hypo, so it tends to be...

Professional Options unlock code for Freestyle Libre

It's a while ago, but thanks for this. I was trying to adjust ratios on the meter and get it to do insulin advice a while back with my DSN and dietician, but they couldn't get it to do what we wanted, either. It was stuck in portions, too, which it isn't now. Thanks, again.

How long were you on fixed doses for?

I was diagnosed in Liverpool in 1981. I was in hospital (Alder Hey) for ten days, whilst my glucose levels normalized and they educated me on doing my own injections, swapping needles, sterilizing syringes, and counting carbs. The counting was more "55grms of mashed potato will be this many...

How long were you on fixed doses for?

I hope you're joking! Treating hypos with beer? Insulin guessing? First off, never count carbs in beer. Alcohol lowers blood glucose, and impairs the liver's ability to naturally counteract lower blood glucose (your liver won't dump glycogen into your blood stream if it's already processing...

How long were you on fixed doses for?

They can be symptoms of hypos. what happens if you take rapid-acting sugars when that happens? What's your blood glucose level when those things happen? What's your "usual" glucose level (although we all know there's no such thing as normal)? Do you tend to run high or low?
