Has anyone found a reliable strategy with beer?

I get the same "problem" as you (though note I've put it in inverted commas). I love real ale - and sometimes the well-hopped artisan lagers. I know they're high in carbs and will spike my blood sugars. Also I know that if I try to dose my insulin for my blood sugars I'll end up with a hypo as...

    "Spare" Novopen 6

One of my (very old) Novopen-4 finally broke after 10+ years of constant use. I talked to the doctor who ordered me a replacement couple of Novipen-6. They also ordered another two for me "for spares". I've just read the packaging and realised that they only have a limited shelf life (5/6 years)...

    Metformin

Just to add my 2p worth. I was put on metformin when I was first (mis)diagnosed with type2. Unknown to everyone I had actually come down with type LADA (Late Onset). After a few years I was put on insulin - but kept with the metformin. The thing I would say is that metformin reduces the...

    Graham’s Expresso Caramel Ice Cream

Trying to get the right information, I notice their website lists the carbs and sugar separately, but don't say "carbs... of which sugar..." like nearly all other food manufacturers' state. So if this is different, it nearly doubles the Carb content - or is it just poor info. Could someone that...

    metformin and alcohol

Would like to add my two p'worth. Yes the Lite does say do not drink alcohol because of the (supposedly) link with acidosis. But there has been other studies showing zero correlation between Metformin intake, alcohol and acidosis. For me, I drink in pubs if I eat in pubs I take insulin for the...

    Carbs in a banana??

Bananas are an unknown quantity as far as I am concerned. It really depends upon how ripe the banana is. For me (T1) I can eat a whole one if it's just off green. When it's yellow/turning black I need at least 3 units to counteract maybe 4.

Dropping insulin pen down the pan

Ha ah. Nope. I was a "late user" so single use disposable needles. But then again, I would never inject into a bit of skin that was dirty (but not necessarily surgically uncontaminated)

    Confused, concerned and disappointed

Sorry if this has already been mentioned before and I'm repeating somebody else's recommendations (too many posts to trawl through) - I think the main point about moisturising own feet is not to keep them moist (bad idea as stated above) but so you get to know the look and feel of them so you'll...

Dropping insulin pen down the pan

Definitely don't use it immediately. Soak the end in dettol or similar for at least 20 minutes. Any germs on the end of the pen will just go up inside the needle that you will then inject into yourself.

I would phone your gp. They'll have a list.

    low in potassium

As this is about low potassium and having supplements, what do people here think of using something like a low-sodium salt substitute which has sodium-chloride replaced by potassium-chloride? Would that work?

    BG15.9 at 3:15pm, hypo 3h25m later

I wonder if your previous reading of 15.9 was a false reading? As you said you were peckish, so the numbers didn't seem to match your feelings. Could have been a duff strip - or something on your finger that affected the result? Then you not eating when you thought you should would have led to...

Type 2 How often to change lancet?

I use a multiclix as well as other posters. I tend to use one each day - turning for a fresh one. But then my daily routine is fairly constant so I only test 2 or 3 times a day. The difference was this holiday. Routine completely out the window so had to test 5 or 6 times a day. Found that after...

Stress, the cause of type 1

I think that for people that may have a predisposition for diabetes then a traumatic event could "trigger" it - or more like the straw that breaks the camels back. I had a motorcycle "accident" in my late thirties (stolen car came out a side road into me). Long story short but 18 months later...

What do you miss most from being diabetic

Bizarre that it may seem, my biggest miss is tinned cherry pie filling toasted sandwiches. That used to be my goto comfort food. Since I became type 1 at age 40 I don't think I carry around enough insulin to cover that carb load!

    Hypo treatment

I always carry glucose tablets, or have them nearby. However I've learnt the hard way that I have to open up a new packet and place two or three tablets in miniature ziplock type bags. Once I was having a bad hypo, picked up a new packet of dextrose but lost hand coordination and couldnt...
