Type 1 Pilot class 1 medical

Sorry, not on here too often! Currently you do need to be a current class 1 medical holder when diagnosed with T1D. That may change in the future like it did for HIV pilots.

Hi Quarion, When you say report, I take it you mean medical? Currently, you have to have held a medical already but I suspect that will change going into the future. If you read up on the UK CAA changing the rules on initial medicals for people with HIV, you could be optimistic in thinking the...

Type 1 Diabetic looking for best way to obtain class 2 medical for PPL.

Hi Duncan, You can fly solo under a Class 2 medical. I have a Class 1 and fly commercially. I was looking into renewing my licence to fly lighter GA aircraft and the solo aspect on my medical raised some questions. When I was at the CAA for my 6 month check in October, I asked the aeromedical...

Hi Sam. Are you in the UK? Currently, my understanding is that you need to have held a Class 1 medical before your diagnosis of T1 diabetes. That could well change in the future. I believe in the past, if you have HIV, you'd need to have held a Class 1 medical prior to diagnosis but that...

Hi there. Sorry to hear about your brothers recent diagnosis. I hope he is coping well! First question would be to ask what country his medical certificate was issued from? Currently, in Europe, only the British, Irish and Austrians offer medical certificates for commercial flying.

Hypos milder whilst on keto - is there any scientific evidence?

I can only speak regarding the UK CAA. Canada, Austria and Ireland are the other countries that allow pilots who are insulin dependant to fly commercially. The FAA in the US has been recommended to uptake a protocol for insulin dependant pilots but I’m not sure if that’s official yet. On the...

Hi Magic1973. I still have to finger prick in accordance with the CAA diabetes protocol. They know about my Freestyle Libre and are happy for me to use it, but only to supplement the finger prick testing. I understanding that a trial in the future will be carried out comparing both CGM and...

    DVLA Licence Renewal

I filled out the online form asking how many hypos I've had in the last 12 months; none, one or two or more. I answered 2 or more. It then asked if I felt them. I do, so yes. Then is progressed on to how many hypos I've had that required 3rd party assistance to which I've experienced none. New 3...

    DVLA Licence Renewal

Thanks for the response! Never been caught out and never required any help so I have no reason to worry. I have just come across one or two threads where the DVLA can seem difficult in certain circumstances so just thought I'd ask!

    DVLA Licence Renewal

Today I got a letter from the DVLA for my driving licence renewal as it'll be 3 years in July. I was having a little look through the paperwork to fill out and the medical questionnaire, DIAB1, asks if you've had any hypos in the last 12 months. I assumed it meant hypos where you require third...

Hi Michael - as far as I'm aware, Class 1 commercial operations are allowed with multi-pilot limitation (medical flight test in full motion sim has to be carried out). NPPL and PPL allowed (medical flight test done with CFI). The only item on my medical certificate stating 'NOT APPLICABLE' is...

Advice for a newly diagnosed type 1 and doing acrobatics

I'm living proof you can fly commercially with T1 diabetes. One of the few Guinea pigs - just flown 9 days out of 10 (hello summer season) with the lowest reading of 5.6 and highest 9.6. As already mentioned, it's just a few more hoops to jump through and regular 6 month check ups but not...

I WANT TO EAT PIZZA HELP

I've tried ASDA stuffed crust pizza on the pump - I have finally gotten a flat line by giving the insulin at 65/35 for over 5-6 hours. Each one I find varies due to the fact its thin base, thick base, amount of fat in it or stuffed crust for example.

I have a Libre prescription in Epsom. Just moved to West Sussex and also got the Libre on prescription there. Just required a letter from my treating consultant for the latter.

    Being a pilot

It's a bit of an unknown from my end... My understanding up until recently was that in order to fly with a Class 1 medical and have insulin treated diabetes, you had to have already been holding a Class 1 medical. As a result, the answer would be no. However! Recently, in the news, there was...

    Libre on prescription

Yeah I get 4 boxes (Contour Next) each time, Libre sensors, vials and pens of insulin. I also get 2 boxes of accucheck strips. All of the above isn't always in one big order but when I need them as and when. The NHS seems to be very flexible with me due to my flying. I use a pump so need vials...
