    Tears of happiness

That's great news WhitbyJet and put a smile on my face :) When I was a kid, my parents ended up fostering the daughter of one of their closest friends - dad and daughter lived with us for several years, but he often went off travelling and when she got to a certain age she wanted to stay at...

    Foot bruising...

Hello everyone, I'm a 22 year old type 1 and I've had diabetes for 11 years. No complications so far. Recently I've noticed on a few occasions I have 'stepped funny' for want of a better way of putting it and had a momentary sort of crunching pain in my foot. We're not talking any real kind of...

Places should cater more for diabetics!

Weirdly I have found that a lot of the own brand drinks "contain sugar and sweeteners" - I would have expected that they would use sweeteners for values sake too! That said, tesco own brand diet energy drink got me through a few late night essay writing sessions when I was at uni...

Places should cater more for diabetics!

I seem to have hit a nerve with a few people on the diet drink thing  Tbh in my case, it's the little shops that do a whole range of soft drinks but very very few diet ones that bother me more than the pubs - I'm not a big spirit/mixer drinker. But I went out (in London) with a friend...

    Blood type

Unless there is a specific reason for checking your blood type, I'm pretty sure they don't do it as routine. As someone who has never needed a blood transfusion and as a type 1 diabetic is unable to give blood, I've never had mine tested.

Places should cater more for diabetics!

I have one (in the grand theme of things very small) problem in that very few pubs and local shops sell any kind of diet drinks other than diet coke - I like diet coke but it gets very boring when it's all that's on offer! Other than that I agree with the others, takes a bit more planning but...

organ donation . opt in? or opt out?

I am more on the opt-out than the opt-in side of this argument - although I do appreciate the arguments about the government taking away personal choice, to me the number of lives saved is more important. I am registered as an organ donor even though I know it's quite likely no-one will want my...

Numb feet and spreading up leg.....

Just to put out there - vitamin b12 deficiency can also cause pins and needles and it is more common in diabetics, especially if you take metformin. Might be worth a mention to GP as they can diagnose it with a blood test.

type1 dafne trained.we know more than nurses when in hospita

Re: type1 dafne trained.we know more than nurses when in hos My mum is a practice nurse of 20+ years, not diabetic specialist but inevitably does come across diabetics of both types in her day to day work. She has openly admitted that she has learnt far more from helping me deal with my type 1...

    Which is easier?

I was diagnosed aged 11 (now 22) and, as times to be diagnosed with diabetes go, I've always thought it was quite a "good" age. It was the summer between primary and secondary school so I was going through a lot of changes anyway, so diabetes was just another thing to add to the list, and I was...

    middle names

My parents called me Margaret Clare (no i!). I have always hated Margaret and have been Maggie since babyhood. The only reason they didn't call me Maggie to begin with is because I was named after several Margarets on both sides of the family. I still don't respond when they call for Margaret in...

    The forums Pet thread :)

This is our Rosie, she is a Heinz 57! Mother was an Airedale who was rescued while pregnant, father unknown, but she most looks like a mini-Irish Wolfhound (about Springer Spaniel size). She is a bit of a grumpy old lady these days, very deaf, but can still act like a puppy and outrun much...

    Medical Alert Tattoos?

Here is my diabetes medic alert tattoo, done today. Not great quality pic but I'm really pleased with it, it turned out exactly as I wanted :) I'm a student nurse so we aren't allowed to wear bracelets, even medic alerts, because of infection risk, which is what finally tipped me into getting...

Who saw the channel4 programme on GLP-1 drugs?

I watched the programme, I was actually under the consultant from Southampton a few years back. As a type 1 I've never been on any of these drugs, but it made some very interesting watching. Ali H and others who have mentioned it, although no one would expect them to go into great depth on the...

    Syringes

I have a handful of contigency syringes that live in my handbag...covers two eventualities in my book - pen gets lost/broken, or I'm an idiot and forget a spare cartridge...those last 10 or so units in the cartridge once it's "finished" can be very handy until I make it home! I did get them...

    Bruising??

I've been an easy bruiser since I was tiny and I'm always covered in them, some people just bruise more easily than others! Having said that, if it's only started happening recently, it's probably worth a trip to your GP. xx

Type 1 - Is it genetic?

I've been type 1 for 10 years, diagnosed aged 11. No history of either type 1 or 2 in my family as far as I know, but we do have rather a lot of asthma/eczema/hayfever and a decidedly genetic penicillin allergy running down the females on my dad's side of the family, including me. If the...

For the ladies - high BS before periods

Mine tends to be high in the days leading up to it...then plummets once my period starts. Like the rest of you, unpredictable and just have to deal with it as it comes! xx

    redundant pancreas

Nope, as not the whole pancreas has stopped working, just the beta cells that produce insulin. There are other cells in the pancreas that produce digestive enzymes, which for most diabetics do still work (the exception being cystic fibrosis induced diabetes which is a different kettle of fish)...

Tips for supporting (nearly) teenage girl

Probably a combination of all of the above! I was diagnosed at 11, now 21, and yes those early teenage years were difficult to say the least. Trying to find the line between being supportive and not being "interfering" is difficult and something I clashed with my mum about a lot. One thing I...
