    DVLA!!

Well I'm pleased to say that my license was renewed within just a few few weeks of completing the required information online without issue. I've been T1D for 53 years and have a couple of other medical conditions and never once have the DVLA let me down! I posted this in attempt to present a...

Low carb or no carb - lessons learned...

This is what the consultant told me in response to that question I asked when I was diagnosed in 1968. Thanks to that answer having a hypo (must have had hundreds by now) has never bothered me. It's just a routine now to take on carbs to get the BS back to normal.

What can I do with greek yogurt?

I add sugar free jelly to it! It's so easy, follow the instruction for making the jelly then add in most of a large container of natural Greek yogurt and hey presto it looks like blancmange. You could also use it to make pancakes. Look for recipes in the low carb programme.

Low carb or no carb - lessons learned...

I was once told, many years ago by my Diabetes consultant, that the worse that will happen if you lose consciousness because your BS goes too low is that you will wake up with a severe headache. So nothing to be scared about! Mind you I have never tested this theory out.

    Scar tissue build up?

Hi Shannon. You really seem to be describing lipohypertrophy. As others have said on here you should rotate your injection sites. Slower acting insulin is probably best injected into your bum, nice fleshy area. Faster acting insulin probably best down the front upper sides of your legs...

    Type 1'stars R Us

I eat less than 100 grms of carbs per day (mainly proteins and veg) but am partial to a drop of the red stuff. The drop in HBA1C is probably as a result of getting a Freestyle Libre which has enabled me to understand my daily trends better.

T1, Dapagliflozin, weight loss, DKA risk

I tend to have less than 100grms of carbs per day, eating mainly proteins and vegetables (excl potatoes and similar high carb options). This does exclude the few glasses of red wine I like to have each evening, The aspirin was prescribed approx. 10yrs ago to prevent heart attacks, although...

T1, Dapagliflozin, weight loss, DKA risk

Morning fellow T1Ds. I don't write on here very often but I usually read selected articles on a regular basis. Since I've been suffering with back spasms, which are keeping off the golf course, I find that I have more than a little time to contemplate my current condition. I'm on...

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

Had my annual visit to see the local Consultant this week! She advised me that my HBA1C was 47 - best result ever as I usually come in around 51 - 53. In fact, I think the low carb regime has significantly contributed to this result. Now I have to maintain it! Happy days.

Has anyone here been a diabetic for more than 40 years?

Hi Guys. Nice to see some long-term diabetics doing so well. My heart goes out tom those having complications. I'm on my 51st year since being diagnosed on 3/10/1968. Thankfully I have a clean bill of health (hope I haven't jinxed myself there) except for the back spasms I've had recently...

    Type 2 Eggs

I'm T1D on a lowish carb regime. I have variations of eggs, bacon, black pudding, tomatoes and occasionally a sausage. Depending on how low my BS is sometimes I'll have half a slice of fried wholemeal bread (a Bruce bonus)! There's also an option of 'no added sugar' baked beans weighing in at...

    Freestyle Libre and airport security

I'm off to Berlin shortly so having just had the Freestyle Libre I'll find out directly if there are any issues with it when checking in - I've got my fingers crossed. That was a very helpful question with reassuring responses.

    Help please

I've been T1D for for 50+years and having been told to wear a BR monitor for 24hrs after my routine check-up was prescribed 5mg tablets of Ramipril to take daily. I've not had any ill-effects from taking them. I also take 20mg tablet of Atorvastatin for cholesterol even-though when I was...

Type 2 Dear GP, please don't weigh me before doing my BP.

I'm confused folks. I haven't had fasting bloods done in years. The blood for my HBA1C, cholesterol and other bodily functions tests are taken whenever I can get to the hospital. Therfore does it matter if you fast or not. In our area it seems not to.

    Libre Sensor

Hi Helensaramay. I've been T1D for 50 years and still have very good awareness signs of falling or rising BS. I know that the sensor readings tend to lag a finger prick by 10 mins or so (in my case) but, the arrow trend indicator is very useful in confirming what I believe is happening. My...

    Libre Sensor

I'm not on a pump but I have very recently moved off finger pricking to the Libre. What a fantastic invention this is. After many years of sticking needles in me 4/5 times a day, I have not had to test once as I find the Libre very reliable. What is very useful is that it tells you if you're...

    Diabetic Sweets!

Marks and Sparks do 'sugar free' hard boiled sweets in different flavours. A stall in our local market specialising in sweets has a selection of sugar free jelly babies, which I tend to favour. At £1 per 100grms they have no affect on my BS but if you eat to many you'll need your running shoes...

ADVICE ON INSURANCE + Travelling to Netherlands!

I also take out annual travel insurance which costs around £150pa, it covers my wife and I (T1D) for travel anywhere in the world. We tend to do a few trips away each year. I used to work from time to time in The Netherlands and on one return trip home was asked to put my all medication in my...

Who on here eats a ' normal diet"......

Just returned from a two week ALL INCLUSIVE holiday to Cape Verde. Didn't really know what to expect but before booking I had confirmed that the main restaurant served up a large variety of food. To keep it short, 4/5 different varieties of fish every evening, pasta/pizza area, beef, lamb...
