NHS Direct doctor says... NO testing when taking Metformin

Metformin's main purpose is to suppress excess glucose production by the liver since the messed-up insulin is giving it the wrong messages. Taking metformin without food is simply a waste. Without food, the liver isn't going to produce any glucose and the metformin you've taken never gets to do...

Did your GP fail to diagnose diabetes?

I had been doing a long commute between Bristol and the Welsh Valleys for seven months. Originally, it should have been for seven weeks but the contract kept getting extended. I was getting run down, getting by on four hours sleep a night, and not noticing anything amiss. When things did being...

What do you class as high blood sugars

A radical and quick interpretation there. Nope, kidney and liver all tickety-boo and really I prefer hydration and contraction of muscles over the see-sawing hit-and-miss insulin corrections. I'm not being critical of your need to take an insulin shot - it just doesn't work for me.

What do you class as high blood sugars

I've been mulling that one over for the past few weeks as I tried to deal with my weight increasing after being constant for a decade. Insulin is also known as the fat storage hormone. So if the function of insulin is to facilitate the movement of glucose out of the blood stream and into...

What do you class as high blood sugars

My take is - and this is the key in my log: 5-7 on target, 7-10 keep an eye on it, 10-13 take action with hydration and movement, 13+ inject insulin. Last night, my levels fell from 13 to 8.1 within half-an-hour by just drinking 2 pints of water.

    Diabetic troubles as a man...

Andy, it is quite common. I can appreciate how frustrating and anxiety-proving it is for you. It sounds like you're in pretty good form overall, but this phenomenon we're talking about is a marvel of hormones, nerves and circulation - and diabetes plays holy hell with all of those. I did read up...

    Diabetic troubles as a man...

This little exchange is hilarious. I'm just going to make the observation that if S&M doesn't hurt, you're probably doing it wrong.

    How many Lancets?

I was used to changing only with new pens. My pharmacist just said curtly he was sure I'd been warned about infections. Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

    Insuline having little effect

I had been feeling discouraged about how little effect bolus shots were having. Then I read enough to become convinced that changing your injection site does make a difference. The first time I gave myself a correction shot in the thigh, I landed exactly where I expected to two hours later -...

    High sugars

For real? Down to 1? On the couple of occasions where my BGL has fallen towards 2, I've felt decidedly unwell. I don't know enough about your situation to be an alarmist, but I'd definitely be looking to talk to the diabetes nurse at my local surgery in the first instance. I suspect that...

Link between poor blood sugar control and emotions?

I'm surprised nobody has been forthcoming with information in the past three months. The link is well-established. Just for starters: From: Acute Hyperglycemia Alters Mood State and Impairs Cognitive Performance in People With Type 2 Diabetes...
