Pregnancy/preconception - Issues or unrealistic expectations?

This is absolutely not what should be happening! The whole point of pre conception care is to ensure that your wife is in the best physical health possible before conception, in order to minimise complications for her and the baby. Remind them of the details of NG3, and ask if there is a...

Pregnancy/preconception - Issues or unrealistic expectations?

Hi there, Your diabetes team should offer pre conception care. This is usually bloods to check current health status (kidneys, thyroid, Hba1c), medication check (to ensure that they are safe for pregnancy), referral for retinal screening and advice on diet/nutrition. 5mgs Folic acid daily...

Type 1 Several episodes of hypoglycemia, out of the blue!

Hi there, no idea what your circumstances are so please don't take offence - unexpected/unexplained hypos can be a sign of early pregnancy in women with T1DM.... Just a thought. D x

    GTT

Hi there, congratulations! You should definitely not have a GTT - this is used to diagnose GDM, as others have said. Could potentially be harmful too - asking you to fast if you are on insulin and then giving you 75g glucose in one go. Please query this with your diabetes midwife. All the best...

    Fasting morning levels high

Hi Sam, Have you tried having a supper or bedtime snack? Sometimes with GDM the fasting readings can be fixed by this simple option. It can help prevent your liver doing a dawn glucose dump. Hope this helps, D x

    Insight app

Heard nothing but would love to. I have to decide this week whether or not to get another Insight and use My Sugr until the app is available. Or to choose a different pump. Have been using my handset and My Sugr app alongside each other for a week to calculate boluses. Surprised at how often...

    Diagnosis

Was 12 years old (over 30 years ago). On holiday in Donegal which involved lots of long walks. Couldn't walk far for tiredness, peeing behind a bush every 10 minutes and unquenchable thirst. Taken to doc after my sis (student nurse) recognised symptoms. Dipped urine, showed loads of glucose and...

Handset for Accu check Insight pump discontinued

So, now I'm back to considering the Accuchek Insight! Just watched a couple of videos on YouTube of how to fill the reservoir on a couple of options - which seems quite a faff compared to popping in a new cartridge and twisting on the new cap with tubing. Have downloaded the My Sugar app - pro...

Handset for Accu check Insight pump discontinued

Thanks for your reply. I have loved my Insight and am reluctant to change it, but considering other options. The manual input is a faff, especially when it's winter and I wear more layers than most The wireless adapter you mention - is that the adapter for the Accuchek Mobile? I used a Mobile...

Handset for Accu check Insight pump discontinued

No, I have a Libre and use the Accu check combined handset & glucose meter to calculate boluses. Sometimes do the calculations in my head with info from the Libre.

Handset for Accu check Insight pump discontinued

Hi all, I currently use the Accu check Insight and I'm due for an upgrade in the new year. Have been sent a list from the hospital of pumps to choose from. I'm very happy with my insight, apart from the well known slowness issues with the handset. I am not on large doses so the prefilled 1.6ml...

Type 1 and just discovered I'm pregnant

Hi there, Congratulations on your pregnancy! You need to get an emergency prescription for folic acid 5mgs. This cannot be bought over the counter. You can also self refer to your nearest maternity unit - not a birth centre or midwifery led unit. Let them know asap that you have T1DM and that...

    Suddenly having more hypos!

Have you considered that you might be pregnant? The lows that you are describing could be explained by early pregnancy in women with T1DM. Just a thought. D x

    Type 2 first trimester

Hi there, Congratulations on your pregnancy. I would suggest that you contact your GP immediately and ask for an urgent referral to your local antenatal clinic, if you haven't already done so. When you are referred, you are normally under the care of the diabetes and obstetric teams. The...

    hba1c too high

Hi there, I would investigate my local pre pregnancy clinic for women with diabetes. Sometimes run at GP surgery, sometimes within hospital clinics. You can self refer to them. They are great for support whilst lowering HbA1c, and do other stuff to prepare you for pregnancy like checking kidney...

Type 2 means induced labour and monitoring?

Hi there, Congrats on your pregnancy. Unfortunately the rate of stillbirth at term for women with diabetes remains higher than the general population. This does not seem to be reliant on blood sugar control. The placenta forms and develops differently for women with diabetes, again despite...
