Opinion Please:Newbie and first basal profile change

I feel your frustration! I've been wanting to do some basal testing myself but I failed miserably earlier in the week. I was planning on skipping lunch to test my afternoon rates but I started to feel faint and couldn't concentrate properly at around 3. My glucose levels were all good but I...

Also I found talking to other diabetics really helped as I felt less alone and realised that nobody is achieving perfect blood sugar 100% of the time.

    Health Anxiety

I wish I could offer you a magic bullet @CartaX2 but all I can do is reassure you that you are not the only one to struggle with this. Personally I find distraction to work the best, when I get worried or upset about something I watch something on YouTube or listen to a podcast or go for a run...

Opinion Please:Newbie and first basal profile change

A short period of slightly higher bloods won't hurt you so try not to let it upset you as you try to bring it down (easier said than done I know!). Are you eating? Sometimes if you have skipped meals you can get "starvation" Ketones rather than "oh cr*p my insulin isn't going in" Ketones, but...

Opinion Please:Newbie and first basal profile change

Glad to hear the surgery went well @Picci! When you say you have a temporary basal rate of 20% do you mean 120%? Otherwise you'd be taking less insulin not more!

Opinion Please:Newbie and first basal profile change

Hi @Picci, sorry I am a bit late to the party! I can only repeat what @Books1 and @Chas C have said. My profile also has more than 3 changes in it, I start ramping up at 3am to deal with the dawn effect then an upwards blip in the afternoon and then trailing down to the evening. I am still...

I don't know if you can access it from the USA but have a look at the BERTIE online course: https://www.bertieonline.org.uk/

I always thought Diabetics and ninja's have more in common than people realise ;)

explaining what it's really like to live with Type 1

People generally don't notice, or if they do don't care. I sat next to the same guy at work for 5 years and I always injected at my desk. It came up once in conversation and he was surprised that I had been doing it! If you act like it's normal and no big deal people will follow your lead.

Diabetes UK forums, org and co? BDA???

Sadly this is as true for the cheese monger as the Baker. Everyone has an agenda they are pushing, even the people we see as being on our side. In an ideal world we wouldn't need corporate sponsorship but currently we do, and I'd rather some of Tesco's profits went to researching my disease...

Diabetes UK forums, org and co? BDA???

Yes that was a bad choice and they should have known better (Particularly if they want to stick a diabetes label on it), but I think you are confusing ignorance with deliberate evil. I expect the thought process went like this: Easter is a big event, people give Easter eggs to each other at...

Diabetes UK forums, org and co? BDA???

@zand Which is why they are cheaper to buy, but there is no law that says profit margins must be greater on bread than cheese. The simpler explanation is that Tesco makes money selling food, so it makes sense for them to be involved with a charity about a condition strongly connected with food...

Diabetes UK forums, org and co? BDA???

This is always such a strange argument to me. Tesco will just as happily sell you bacon and cheese and nuts instead of bread. In fact probably more happily so since those things cost more! Tesco care about you buying food from them, I struggle to see why they would bother getting involved in a...

    Best Diet for Type 1

Don't feel bad! It isn't a wrong suggestion @Fairygodmother! It's just another kind of diet, same as suggesting the 5:2 or the South Beach. From what I've seen your advice is always good. Food and diabetes is always such a complicated and ultimately emotional conversation. I think we're all...

Sorry @Hollieo4 reading back over it I came across a bit strident in my last post! But it is.something I feel passionate about. All of Scott advice is excellent.

    Best Diet for Type 1

I agree with you @Scott-C I have seen many posts with T1's worried that they are taking too much insulin. And there are many posts from T2's talking about how desperate they are to avoid going onto it. All of which can give the impression insulin is bad and cause feelings of failure in those...

    Best Diet for Type 1

Hi @Hollieo4 the correct amount of insulin is whatever keeps your blood glucose in range, some people only need a little, for others it's more ( I have 1:7 insulin to carb ratio so I have had entire meals that need 11 units ;) ) I also wouldn't worry about the 1lb gain you can go up and down...

    wierd day

Yes! Last couple of days I have found myself wondering if the insulin concentration in my cartridge is magically higher than normal :bored:

Be honest, how -are- you doing?

I have been trying to do a basal test for the past couple of days but something keeps happening to stop it! First a hypo, then a high I had to correct, then a set change for the pump, then something at work. I am trying to do the right thing here body, help me out a little!

    Yay, First Set Change!

Well done! I was so nervous about if I had done it right when I did mine :) My nurse recommended checking after 2 hours as depending on how long you find it takes for insulin to work it's way through your system you'll still have some left from the old set .
