    HBA 1c testing

If unable to get an A1c test from your physician, in the U.S. (and I assume in Great Britain), there is a home testing kit made by Bayer called the A1c Now which is pretty accurate for an in-between-visit gauge. The kit contains two tests and costs about $30 U.S.

    Slow release metformin advice

I have been on this drug since it was introduced (at which time it was called glucophage - merformin is the generic name). I am on 2 gr. of extended release and my doctor recommended I take all of it with my evening meal. When I was on the regular release tablets, I took them at breakfast and...

    Pesky dawn phenomenon

I've been a type 2 for 30 years. I have had difficulty getting my fasting blood sugar to stay below 5.5. For the last three weeks I have been trying Intermittent Fasting (IF) and have found it to be very helpful. Basically, on days that I IF, I eat a very low carb breakfast and lunch (but...

    Metformin or not?

I have been on Metformin since it was introduced as brand name Glucofage many years ago. It is a safe drug and has other benefits besides helping control blood sugars, such as cancer prevention. There are people who have gastric issues taking it (diarrhoea, etc.), but otherwise no issues...

Low carbs not that easy is it?

Over the long term (years, not months), many people find it difficult to maintain a low carb eating plan. Jenny Ruhl has a book on the subject. There is a lot of good information about diabetes on her website: http://diabetesupdate.blogspot.com/ One thing you can try to make your lunch...

    low carb,high fat diet,Not lost much !!

I wouldn't recommend going low fat. Did you read a book when you started low carb or did you just dive in? You could easily be eating too much protein. I'd recommend reading The New Adkins for a New You or The Smarter Science of Slim as good guides to doing a low carb diet.

    The Heat

If you are sweating a lot then you may be getting a bit dehydrated. Dehydration increases blood sugar levels because your body will leach fluid from the blood and leave the glucose behind (so you have the same amount of glucose in a lower volume of fluid - a higher percentage of glucose)...

    Ketosis results

Protein is probably your issue. Not that you shouldn't be eating it, but 1/2 of the protein you eat is eventually converted to glucose. So if you are near the line for getting into ketosis and you eat too much protein, you may go over. 50g. of carbs seems to be the top for a conversion to...

    HbA1c now 5.8!!!!

Super  I have a new goal for you. There has been a study released which shows the A1c to possible be the best predicter of heart disease. Apparently, 5.4 is the cut off for healthy hearts. My goal is to get there. You are close so keep going.

    Byetta / Bydureon

I was on Byetta for a couple of years, but it caused me more problems than anything else. I think it is designed for patients who eat a diet higher in carbohydrates than I do. If you eat a low carbohydrate diet, it doesn't seem to help much and for me, it made me have frequent lows. So I had...

    Acid Reflux

My wife had the same experience. She had reflux and other gastro problems which went away after she had eaten a very low carb diet for a while (which she does in support of me, since she is not a diabetic). I used to have to take antacids nightly and no longer need to.

    Ketosis & Fat

Regarding the use of ketone strips for testing - once you are ketone adapted, your body burns ketones more efficiently and they essentially don't spill over into your urine. So if a ketogenic diet is your goal, you don't wish to continue to see dark purple colors on the ketone strips. Once you...

    Sugar substitutes

I heard a podcast recently on Jimmy Moore's site dealing specifically with sweeteners. It was said that the only really safe sugar substitute was Stevia, but that even then one must read the label and make sure that there are not other indesireable elements included. I went to two different...

    still not losing any weight

I know I have to be on a very low carb diet to control my diabetes - < 30g of carbs a day. Initially I did not really exercise and lost weight. I have never been able to lose the last 15 lbs. or so that I would like to. I have resisted an aggressive exercise program because of the studies...

A1C self test kit from Bayer

OK - I see my doctor often enough that I don't really need a 10 test kit set, but its good to know - I haven't seen them on the shelf in the drug store.

A1C self test kit from Bayer

I am in the U.S. and periodically use this product. The results hold up pretty well with the results from a visit to my endocrinologist. The only version available here contains only two tests, but the cost is only $29 for the kit fo thats $15 per test. I think that is about 9.5 Pounds a test.

    The epetition

I'm from the USA so I don't really have a role in this fight, but that never kept me from having an opinion. The healthcare systems in both the US and in Britain have major issues. As to the effectiveness of testing in diabetes care, it is the main thing that taught me what I can and cannot...
