Am I on the wrong track completely?

Hi @RN25 thanks for your insights. I have been using a CGM for the last few weeks and finger prick checking my highs and lows with a Glucometer to get an idea what is causing the see-saw effect on my blood sugar. My doctor won’t check for antibodies but has agreed to ask endocrinology to review...

Oh dear - just got my HbA1c results via MyChart! Terrible.

So sorry that a fall has shaken you up @Lizzie2 and your HbA1c has been moving in the wrong direction! So easy to knock your confidence. Would your husband benefit from walking arm in arm with you? My husband and I do it and we can now brisk walk in sync with each other but you could start...

    How accurate is HbA1c?

Typical day LUNCH - 2 slice granary sourdough sandwich (cheese, egg, tuna or peanut butter) with large salad and a few of my husbands crisps followed by small home baked low sugar cookie or similar and apple. or Homemade soup (veg and pulses) and cheese scone with cheese followed by cookie and...

    How accurate is HbA1c?

Hi, worrier1971 your experience certainly sounds similar to mine. I have also taken up running three times a week and my glucose control is definitely improved on those days. I know what you mean about medication. I have genetic, inherited high cholesterol so have been taking statins for a...

Well done! Sounds like you have it sorted.

    How accurate is HbA1c?

Thanks, but I’ve already upped my intake of those foods and have each daily. Without the carbs I can’t avoid losing more weight which is why I’ve been advised to avoid restricting them but then can’t lower my HbA1c

    How accurate is HbA1c?

Thank you @KennyA. How do you manage on one meal a day without losing significant weight? I eat good sized meals and have a great appetite yet can’t put the weight on and my GP believes I am in denial and might actually have an eating disorder!!

    How accurate is HbA1c?

Thank you @Lakeslover. I know that if I restricted my carb intake I might lower my HbA1c but I would have to ensure I keep my calories intake up to avoid losing more weight. You sound like you are clear on what you can eat to avoid those harmful blood glucose rises.

    How accurate is HbA1c?

Thank you @Melgar. When I say eating episodes I mean that I don’t graze but have 2 meals and a light evening snack. I don’t eat low carb as I was specifically advised by GP not to restrict these but to focus on complex, low GI carbs instead. However I don’t process those carbs very well with my...

    How accurate is HbA1c?

Hi, I am in the UK and my HbA1c has been in the pre-diabetes range since 2017. However, I only eat within a 10 hour period so my blood sugars rises are only after my 3 eating episodes as I don’t snack. For the remaining 14 hours when I am fasting my blood sugars are usually within the normal...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

Thanks @Melgar, I will definitely try to check with Glucometer. When it’s high I’ve checked and there seems to be a 5-10 mins time lag but similar readings taking that delay into account. I may check when the CGM says it’s going low which is possibly 10mins before it gets there. Sunday I was...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

UPDATE I have started to wonder if I am worried about nothing and that my raised HbA1c is just natural variability. That my high blood sugars are ok if they return to normal levels fairly promptly. I have started to add-in breakfast this last few days whereas before I ate in a 9 hr window. I...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

Hi @AndBreathe thank you again for your comments. My Libre has been pretty accurate as I have checked it against finger prick readings and these have been either the same or close. My weight loss is unlikely due to overactive thyroid as my pulse rate is pretty low at around 50 to 55 bpm so...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

@AndBreathe Hahaha ’runner’ is probably stretching it! I’m a 70 yr old woman who runs/jogs 3 miles in around 32mins 3 times a week using around 350cals each time. One portion of fish and chips a week would cover that! Remember I am not diabetic so don’t overly restrict my carbs but mainly...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

@AndBreathe thanks again for your comments. I know other people do it but I’ve never calorie counted and don’t intend to start now unless it’s to guage how many grams of carbs I’m consuming and my response to these. I have to be honest I know I have a healthy appetite and eat a good balanced...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

Hi @AndBreathe, thanks for your comments about calorie requirements. I agree calorie requirements are not an exact science, however, for years my husband and I were the same height and weight and ate the same portions of the same food but 2 years ago that all began to change when I started to...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

@RN25 Gosh, sound like your symptoms came on really quickly. I agree your low carb regime may have masked the onset of T1D. Good idea to see your GP with data from a CGM and it sounds like the antibody tests were the clincher. At least now you can be treated appropriately. My symptoms have been...

Am I on the wrong track completely?

@Melgar. Glad to hear your gut recovered so well after being so ill! I also take daily probiotics but I understand according to Zoe) that it can take up to two years to restore a healthy gut biome following antibiotics which is why I am hesitant.

Am I on the wrong track completely?

@lovinglife I’m so sorry that your husband has been so unwell. It puts my problem into perspective. I don’t know what age you both are but no one wants health problems to impact the way they get to enjoy life but sadly as we age this can be sometimes the case. Thinking of you both

Am I on the wrong track completely?

Hi @grantg, thank you for the link to the study. An interesting read. I had read before that iron deficiency anaemia can reduce HbA1c readings but I am only just on the cusp of being anaemic though my Ferritin stores are also very low so not sure if this has had any impact on my results so far...
