Disappointed in advice - Newly DX

Agreed with the acceptance of low carb by some health professionals. While I have not chosen "low carb" myself that is more down to the fact I do not see me being able to keep it up and interactions with the family etc. I did however mention low carb to my DSN and her response made me chuckle...

Disappointed in advice - Newly DX

I was diagnosed December 2018 and my first A1C was 122. While I don't think the diabetes nurse I have seen has always given me the best advice - she has not "forced" me into anything and I have clearly (but politely) told her where I disagreed (and why). I am not someone who can "follow a...

Note to self - no more alpen

Everyone is different of course, but myself I love a bowl of porridge in the morning and the way I make it - it never spikes me. Sure it goes up - eating generally does that regardless - but not much or for long. I think the key is high quality ingredients with little processing. I always...

    How were you diagnosed

Felt something was "off" - had been extremely fatigued for weeks - especially around 3pm and found it almost impossible to work in the later afternoon. Also started drinking around 6 litres a day and having to go pee every 5 mins. Did some research on symptoms and suspected diabetes...

    Yes! Needed to share.

Just wanted to update this post. I've just had my first 3 month review and some things I've not been happy about. I have been trying to lose weight and I am definitely "slimmer" as I needed to get jeans out of storage I had grown out of and can "squeze" through spaces I couldn't a few months...

Man with type 1 diabetes died on holiday without a correct diagnosis

You see, I COULD say that I did that on purpose to prove my point..... but no..... I just "did an oops"!

Man with type 1 diabetes died on holiday without a correct diagnosis

Although of course keytones do not prove type 1. Type 2 can also have DKA. I went to A&E with keytones of 8 in my urine that I tested at home then thought "um, I better get help!". However I am type 2 not type 1. Some did wonder if I was T1 instead but as the glimepiride is working, and...

Man with type 1 diabetes died on holiday without a correct diagnosis

I would add that as people are infallible checks should be put into place that PROMPTS the doctor to call for all tests that should be carried out. Having to actually check a box to say a urine test has been requested/completed would totally avoid the possibility of "forgot".

    possible hypo

It doesn't seem to be uncommon. One explanation is that depending how long your blood sugar has been elevated, your body has become acclimatised to having more sugar in the blood. Suddenly dropping that can cause your body to complain and you feel hypo symptoms. These are often called "Fake...

Proteins on Low carb diet question

I think this is probably one of the most accurate statement that applies to SOOOOOO many different aspects of our disease. We are all different and while others' experiences are helpful, our own experiences may be different. But that doesn't invalidate our experience or that of others. We...

Poll: Which diabetes course(s) have you attended?

Just got back from this "Empower" course, nothing surprising at all, but as suspected slightly worrying especially for those that do not know any better and haven't done any research. Theme of the course was: "Carbs good, Fat bad!" I did point out that these so called "Fad diets" have been...

    Hypo at 4.6mmol/l

Agreed, and yes it may have been lower but even if not it was too low for my body at the time. Took an hour or two before I felt sufficiently better. Needless to say I cancelled going out - no way was I going to get in the car again.

Poll: Which diabetes course(s) have you attended?

Now, if I had been actually drinking tea/coffee when I read that - it would probably be all over my keyboard right about now! I suspect however you are dead right!

    Hypo at 4.6mmol/l

Yes, I am on 2mg Glimepiride. I think the issue is that my body simply isnt used to being at normal levels and is saying to me "Hey! Up the sugar levels - you know you want to!!!". It's wrong though - I don't want to! I am hoping - and expecting - that you are correct. My body needs...

Diabetes UK-Say goodbye to fad diets

It's interesting (and worrying) that they say this. I am personally prepared to accept that in an ideal world (one without diabetes) the advice is sound. Our bodies are made to have all food groups - I firmly believe this. However as diabetics we have an intolerance for carbs (ALL carbs -...

    Hypo at 4.6mmol/l

Today I left my meter at home, so after my fasting reading of 6.3mmol/l I was not able to test myself during the day. Mid afternoon I started feeling very tired and found it hard to concentrate. Eventually I left work at 4pm (a little earlier than usual). Got home and by the time I was...

Poll: Which diabetes course(s) have you attended?

Attending an "Empower" course next Wednesday, taking my wife with me who has recently found to be pre-diabetic so that kinda makes sense her coming for that reason alone. Unfortunately I am totally expecting it to be a "you need to eat more carbs" thing. While I have NOT chosen to go for a...

    Yes! Needed to share.

Oddly, I've not actually seen the GP but have seen the DSN twice, and another nurse to take another blood sample on Monday. I feel quite comfortable about that to be honest, as I believe the DSN probably knows a lot more about diabetes than the doctor anyway!

    Yes! Needed to share.

I agree, and I will certainly try. I suspect from the way she sneered and mumbled about "I don't think anyone should ever do keto diet" when I mentioned it on my first visit, that she will be very sceptical. I don't do a keto diet anyway - but I have definitely cut my carbs down from what...
