    Constant pain

Hi Emshore, reading your post reminded me of my experience when I was diagnosed with type 1 four years and a bit ago. I dropped by blood sugars quickly and went from an hba1c of 91 to 42 in a couple of months but developed treatment induced neuropathy from it. It left me with excruciating pain...

    Complications.

I was diagnosed two and a half years ago and I was also terrified of diabetic complications. It kept me up at night. Then I came across Dr Bernstein's diabetes solution which is the route to normal blood sugars with type 1 diabetes. It's a fairly strict low carb diet and definitely not for...

    Which Insulin better for low-carb?

Hi, I follow a keto diet and use a split-bolus. I take Novorapid for the carbs 20 min before eating and Actrapid for the protein when I finish eating. Actrapid is the type of regular insulin Dr. Bernstein recommends on a keto diet because it better follows the slow release of glucose from...

    Breakfast

I have a cheese omelette and then I don't eat until dinner time. Protein and fat is very filling.

    Little bit confused..

You need to dose insulin for protein on a low carb diet. Like ert I also follow the Bernstein solution and I inject 1u to 15g of protein sometimes up to an hour after eating. In the absence of carbs in the diet the body turns to gluconeogenesis and synthesize glucose from the back bone of the...

    Unofficially official?

He hasn't, but I tested him a lot and he's pretty much always in the high 4's and doesn't spike after meals unless he has a mountain of carbs. Beer is especially bad, I've tested several of my friends (I'm great fun in the pub:)) and they also spike but quickly fall back into range. There's a...

    Unofficially official?

I wouldn't be too worried. My boyfriend hits 10 mmol/l when he has things like big bowl of pasta + candy, fast food, or beer, and he's definitely not diabetic. He comes back into range within 3 hours though. I'm a little bit envious :)

    Very high fasting numbers

Another vote for basal testing. I also find my blood sugar can go high in the morning if I sleep in or have dinner late at night. I hope you work it out.

    Dropped novopen echo

I'm clumsy so I've dropped my novopen echo quite a few times. Last time I smashed the see through glass on the dial but it's still working fine. My guess is they can take a bit of abuse.

Question for those with zero natural insulin left

Five grams of carbs raises my blood sugar by about 2 mmol/l, so a slice of toast without basal insulin would send me into the teens.

    Reduced alcohol tolerance

Hi @LucySW, I also struggled with this after I started eating very low carb a year and a half ago. My vicious hangovers would have me bent over the toilet for half the next day after 3-4 small glasses of wine, even with food and water. It just wasn't worth it, so I dropped alcohol. I've read...

Why won't the NHS tell you the secret to treating diabetes?

It was. Hopefully you're all well again.

Why won't the NHS tell you the secret to treating diabetes?

I didn't know Mosley was so unpopular. The way I see him is as a strong advocate for fasting after he made that documentary Eat, Fast and Live Longer. Didn't think of him as a media ***** that's just looking to sell books, but then I'm a bit biased because I do find him quite handsome :) Also in...

Why won't the NHS tell you the secret to treating diabetes?

I didn't see it on here, so thought I'd share this interesting article by Michael Mosley. It's funny because I remember reading an interview with one of the doctors who cracked stomach ulcers, and he said that if you wanted a noble price in physiology you should find a condition that doctors...

    What’s the perfect hba1c

According to my endocrinologist the perfect HbA1c for a type 1 is 42 mmol/mol. Since this is also the answer to life, the universe, and everything I'm assuming she's correct :) On a serious note I think you need to be a bit obsessed with your diabetes if you want to go below this number, so it...

    Type 1 diabetic gaining weight

Congratulations on controlling the diabetes! Unfortunately I don't think there's a correlation between reduced hba1c and weight. Could it be that you're eating more and moving around less? I know I've put on 6 kg since the covid-paralysis set in from hanging out by the fridge. Might be worth...

This sentence made me giggle. You're a hero at the frontier of science. I also hope you feel better soon. It will be interesting to see how long the symptoms last.

Hi, new here type 1 for 14 years with needle phobia!

Hi Ben, I feel your pain. I had needle phobia when I was diagnosed to the point where I would pass out from simple blood tests. I watched many dinners go cold because I couldn't bring myself to inject. What helped me was to go fast, like a dart, pinch the skin and inject at 45 degree angle. I...

Diabetes and the impact on relationships

Hi Kellie, When I first got diabetes a couple of years ago my blood sugars used to swing a lot and it would make me furious. My boyfriend referred to me as the hypoglycemic rage monster. It was especially bad when I hit a low, overtreated, went high, and then back down again. I've never been an...
