Do you people get all your diabetes stuff for nothing?

Seriously? I do not know of any one who buys their meter, nurses, GPs, hospital clinics all give them out, facebook is full of companies giving them away, they make the money on the strips which we get free on prescription. Since my original BM way back in the 1990's (remember those days...

    Test strip disposal

Get an Acu-Chek mobile, no strips, it uses a cassette with a 50 test tape that is retained within the meter, and winds on after testing, presenting a new test automatically, therefore no fumbling with tubs or foil packs and struggling to put a strip in the meter, therefore no disposal problems...

    Travel chill boxes

No need to pay a fortune, I found a drinks can chiller in a pound shop, big enough to hold four 330ml cans, this is big enough for a small freezer pack and all my insulin requirements etc, I work and travel to Madrid and back every month and this works perfectly, or is it I'm just to mean to...

CANT FIGURE OUT WHY BS GOES UP

@sameer, try a protein based snack and cut out the carbs, something like an unsweetened yoghurt, a decent full fat (preferably organic) Greek, a small amount makes you feel full, I did and problem solved.

Fizzy drinks and people who don't listen

@SueR , another approach that I have seen work really well is to say, "as a customer I am disgusted with your attitude, but as a shareholder of the company I am absolutely appalled at the service shown here", I have had quite a number of grovelling managers frightened that head office would get...

Fizzy drinks and people who don't listen

But people, diet drinks are so much worse for you than the accidental sugar hit of standard drinks, just read the latest research on artificial sweeteners and the health risks associated with them, also it has been proven that diet drinks actually promote weight gain, as they condition your body...

    Do carbohydrates promote weight gain?

Well said, hanadr, I have always taken US research with a pinch of salt if you will excuse me mentioning another no no food! History is full of the big companies using bad science to sell more (witness the amount of bottled water we are conned into drinking, and the drinks companies "losing" the...

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

I have never had problems getting strips, or even changing types when better ones come along. I was told by the community team that if ever I have a problem, to clarify she said, 1) I am entitled to as many as I need, not how many GP thinks. If he ever argues tell him that DAPHNE requires a...

    Medical Alert Tattoos?

Can I just say that a lot of you seem to miss the point, yes a tattoo could do the job, BUT it really should not be seen as a decorative thing, as that will defeat the whole point, to work it must be instantly seen and recognisable in a universally recognised format, swirly script little hearts...

Do you guys actually tell your employers you are diabetic?

Re: Do you guys actually tell your employers you are diabeti If you do not tell your employer, you are in breach of contract for withholding a relevant fact, you will also forfeit some of your rights as well as putting yourself at the obvious risks. Also, in UK, you increase your protection as...

Type 1.5 being a hassle these days

Re 1/2 unit pens, depends on type of insulin and whether its a pre-fill or cartridge pen. I have a 1/2 unit pen for Humalog cartridges whenever I have to replace it the local pharmacist always asks if I want 1/2 or 1 unit as they keep both in stock, and this despite whatever on prescription form!

Is Apidra working for you ?

You seem to be on a very very high doses of insulin, I was the same, on a never ending cycle of increasing doses, then in the summer did the DAPHNE course and within days my insulin started to come down, I was on 90 lantus and about 20-30 humalog each meal, now Im on 13 lantus twice a day and...

    success!!!!!!!!

Low carb is the way to go, even the american health authorities recommend that the diet should have carb down to 30%. However you say porridge for breakfast, which is great, but not readybreak or the instant types, it must be from real oats, as the instants are too heavily processed. You could...

    Blood tests query

I have to go to hospital blood clinic before work, I usually tell receptionist its for type 1 and she assumes its fasting (its not) and then puts me at front of the queue, saves at least 30-45 minutes and get to work on time. There has to an advantage in having type 1!

    1 mile rule

It is a stupid rule, the local Boots is actually in the same building as the surgery, and the same delivery truck delivers to both, and as I live more than a mile away can use either!

When do you take your basal (long acting) Insulin?

Notice the survey doesn't allow for split doses, since splitting dose to breakfast and before bed my control has improved, and dose been cut by some 60-70%

Frustrated after my recent visit to the diabetic nurse

I was the same and so frustrated by conflicting advice and advice that was counter intuitive, over the years my weight increased, my insulin doses rising dramatically, as resistance set in. Then this summer I was sent on DAPHNE course, what a revelation, the advice was so good, and was in line...
