Diabetes Friendly Allotment or Vegetable Patch - What to grow?

Is it a bit like mint that way? It does need to be an "easy" garden, not only for the school kids, but also for me!

Diabetes Friendly Allotment or Vegetable Patch - What to grow?

Might be a bit too tricky if they need to stay in a greenhouse - there will be a greenhouse and I'm sure someone will grow some, but maybe not in my "diabetic plot" :)

Diabetes Friendly Allotment or Vegetable Patch - What to grow?

Mint gets everywhere! And Basil doesn't survive the cold very well, does it? (I'm not a gardener, so I might be wrong!)

I did! These seem the easiest to grow unless there's any other suggestions? Rosemary Parsley Chives Thyme Sage

Diabetes Friendly Allotment or Vegetable Patch - What to grow?

OK, here's a summary so far :) There is some crossover with "salad" veg and "normal" veg, but I have only mentioned the items once. Salad veg: Lettuce Radish Cucumber (Marketmore) Cherry Tomato Tomato (Gardeners' Delight or Sungold) Veg Brocolli Cauliflower Kale Swiss Chard Summer Squash...

Diabetes Friendly Allotment or Vegetable Patch - What to grow?

Many thanks for the varieties :) :) As it is a community garden, it would need to have year-round appeal - there's no rush, so waiting until next summer to plant is all good :)

Any idea which varieties to avoid? Or even, which varieties to go for?

Diabetes Friendly Allotment or Vegetable Patch - What to grow?

Today was my first day volunteering at a new community garden. There are volunteers that have been there for months and work clearing the ground is progressing. As part of my initiation, I was given a tour around the plot of land and there is space allocated for a pond, a picnic area, a...

    Newly diagnosed Hba1c Prediabetes

My doctor has just flat refused to prescribe me the strips and lances. She said it was totally pointless me measuring my glucose levels because I am prediabetic. How in the heck am I supposed to know if the steps I am taking are making a difference to my levels if I don't measure them? Ho...

    Newly diagnosed Hba1c Prediabetes

I quite like chunky soup, so some of the veg can be added after the rest has been blended. Also, I suppose that if you blend and blend until it is really smooth won't be as good as if you gave it a quick whizz :)

    Newly diagnosed Hba1c Prediabetes

Thanks for the 30-minute advice :) I really hope it doesn't spike my levels because I've discovered that fruit smoothies are really, really nice! My new blender won't go to waste though, because I've discovered how easy it is to make soup. 2 measures of cauliflower 1 measure broccoli as...

    Newly diagnosed Hba1c Prediabetes

From my experience, admittedly very limited - doctors just don't have time to go into stuff in too much detail. Mine advised me to eat wholemeal bread - I gave what was left of my white bread to a neighbour and it was 3 or 4 days before I managed to get together a new shopping list. I had the...

    Newly diagnosed Hba1c Prediabetes

I have a list of occasions throughout the day when I think it'd be good to test - at least in the short term: 1) Straight after waking up 2) Straight before eating 3) 1 hour after eating 4) Before exercise 5) After exercise Once things have settled down a bit more - another week or two, I can...
