    What caused it???

My brother was diagnose type I when he was 16, and me at a similar age 8 years later. There was no history prior to that and none since. There was said to be a high prevalance around Devon and Cornwall where we grew up, suggesting that there are environmental factors as well.

    Carb counting

you've maybe learnt to in a way carb count for your regular meals by trial and error over time. i may be wrong, but an HbA1c can be within target even if BG levels through the day are fluctuating between high and low -it's not a foolproof marker of control, just a guiding indicator.

    Struggling....

Dafne is really helpful, but i found that even then my numbers often don't add up or make sense. When i tried a pump for 2 weeks in january my figures were so much better, applying all the principles i'd learnt on DAFNE. The background can be adjusted to match daily spikes caused by hormones. If...

    Working and BG levels

I'm hoping to be on a pump soon. Then it's possible to have different basal (background) programmes for different scenarios -so you could have different basal schedules saved for different shift patterns and days off.

    What's good about your treatment?

I think a key is having services that specialise in type I. It's a different condition to type II and needs treating completely differently by professionals with type I specific interest, training and experience. Some people respond better to a soft 'carrot' approach, whilst others respond...

Help with raised blood sugars at my wits end

Have you considered a pump. Sounds like a lot of the problems could be fixed by a more bespoke background such as that provided by a pump. Sounds like your body's dealing with the hypos ok so try not to worry .

    How much do you take?

The magic 24u of lantus for me. Pump's going to be better as I'll be able to vary the basal amount.

Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pump?

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum Having done Dafne week long course I've been frustrated with the maths often not working (with pens). Had a 2 week trial with the omnipod last month and it all made so much more sense. My results were 80% in target rather than 20% in...

    DAFNE course

I've been type 1 for 20 years and am also a health professional and really didn't think I'd learn much more doing the week Dafne course. When I did it a year ago I was amazed how helpful it was and at the end of the week felt more in control than ever. Going back to work the week after and it...

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

Even though my GP is the diabetes specialist at a large health centre, when I returned from Dafne training he thought I would only need to test BG several times a day to start with, then after that I would need to do it less as I would be able to just know/feel what level I was! Think more GPs...
