Like your/his attitude to it, Ade! Comes across as, yeah, ok, now got this T1 thing going on but I want to know how I'm going to fit that in with a bit of football. Very positive - it's important to carry on with normal life as much as possible after dx and make T1 fit his life rather than your boy change too much for it.
Agree with everything
@catapillar has said about the variables involved. There's a lot of messy unpredictability going on with T1. Your boy will never get them right all of the time - none of us do, even after decades - as long as it's right most of the time, that's ok.
Snackwise, I used to stick a tent on the back of my bike and go cycling round the Highlands a lot, 50 or 60 miles a day for a week. Some oatcakes with jam worked well for that: quick burst from the jam for hills and slow burn from the oats for the duration. Don't know how that would translate to running around playing football.
Just make sure he's got some really fast acting sugar nearby, preferably in his pockets, or at least on the sidelines, like lucozade, glucojuice, glucotabs, dextro tabs. If he ends up dropping to below 4 on field, that's not something you negotiate with or wait until half-time - immediate 10 to 15 g, wait 10 mins, rinse and repeat if not ok, but there'll be times when the drop is so hard and fast that more than 10/15 will be needed - he'll figure those out after a while.
Best of luck, mate. It's not easy but it's manageable.
