My Son Has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

He likes to play football with his mates. Whats the best snack for him to take before he plays out??

Cheers

Ade

Whether your son actually needs a snack before playing football and what the best snack would be would be a bit dependent on a lot of things.

How is your son managing his diabetes? What insulins is he taking? Is he carb counting and what is his insulin to carb ratio? Whether he needs a snack is going to depend on what his blood sugar is before the exercise, when his last bolus and food was, what your experience is of how playing a match actually impacts on his blood sugar (it's easy to assume exercise will cause a blood sugar drop, but for some people something like a football match with lots of adrenaline and short sharp bursts of exercise may cause a blood sugar rise).

A good place to look on type 1 and exercise is - http://www.runsweet.com

Hello and welcome to the forum, sorry to read of your son's diagnosis, I hope you are all managing to cope fairly well.

Like your/his attitude to it, Ade! Comes across as, yeah, ok, now got this T1 thing going on but I want to know how I'm going to fit that in with a bit of football. Very positive - it's important to carry on with normal life as much as possible after dx and make T1 fit his life rather than your boy change too much for it.

Agree with everything @catapillar has said about the variables involved. There's a lot of messy unpredictability going on with T1. Your boy will never get them right all of the time - none of us do, even after decades - as long as it's right most of the time, that's ok.

Snackwise, I used to stick a tent on the back of my bike and go cycling round the Highlands a lot, 50 or 60 miles a day for a week. Some oatcakes with jam worked well for that: quick burst from the jam for hills and slow burn from the oats for the duration. Don't know how that would translate to running around playing football.

Just make sure he's got some really fast acting sugar nearby, preferably in his pockets, or at least on the sidelines, like lucozade, glucojuice, glucotabs, dextro tabs. If he ends up dropping to below 4 on field, that's not something you negotiate with or wait until half-time - immediate 10 to 15 g, wait 10 mins, rinse and repeat if not ok, but there'll be times when the drop is so hard and fast that more than 10/15 will be needed - he'll figure those out after a while.

Best of luck, mate. It's not easy but it's manageable.

Thanks for the Advice. He was diagnosed 6 days ago after a spell in the hospital. We are still learning and have an appointment with the diabetes team tomorrow to learn about Carb counting so its all new to us all.

hi there @Loverock898
welcome to the forum.:)

with such an early diagnosis -- it is a time where a lot of variables will come into play regarding treatment --reality says you will need to take each day as it comes and build up a pattern of what works for your son.

when I play football I always carry a carton or 2 of orange juice in my kit bag ( conveniently on the touchline in case I need it )
