Hi All
Diagnosed type 1 on 10th September 2014
Going to Fuetreventurer on 5th September 2015 and would like advise please
1. How will the heat effect my bs readings
2. Where should my needles go when travelling, hold or hand luggage
3. Where should my test strips go, hold or hand luggage?
4. Do I need to get a letter from my gp?
Any advise would be much appreciated
Many thanks
Always store in your hand luggage split with partner too .
In case anything gets lost or damaged in transit on your journey .
Never allow them in the hold - as this can freeze your insulin and cause damage .
You will need your meter and test strips/needles in your hand luggage too .
FRIO wallets are fabulous for storing your insulin in
As they keep it cool regardless of the heat and warm climate .
Easy to use and re-activate them via a dip in water .
The gel crystals swell up and keep a cooler constant temperature for hours/days .
Reusable over and over again .
Folk in the hot desert climate have used these successfully .
Cover note and letter from your GP is good idea too .
Will explain all - should you get stopped by security or need hospital care
whilst abroad ( make sure you get good health insurance cover too) .
Keep your insulin in its original packaging too .
In case ever need to replace this .
Heat can affect your BG levels - with some persons they go higher
whilst others go lower .
Best to test yourself regularly and keep yourself well hydrated .
Plenty of rehydrating fluids is essential .
Take supplies of your Hypo treatment too .
split these with your partner again - in case they may need to treat/assist you .
A 'small travel sharps box' is perfect to place all your sharps .
Tip into your larger usual sharps bin when return home .
These can be bought for a few pounds and less bulky/noisy to carry around .
Organise plan all ahead , you have plenty of time now till September .
Above all relax and enjoy your well earned holiday and break .
