Hiya

I'm due for my 1st diabetic nurse appointment this afternoon what can I expect ? What should I be asking her ?

Definitely you need all the test result print outs. (Glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol and lipids, kidney and liver functions and anything else they threw in.) You could also check to see if your practice now puts all these on-line as they should have done by April 2016, and ask for a registration form.

Hiya

Well so I just had my 1st appointment. Nurse was like kinda like why am I there and that my diabetes is not that bad haha. Well my hba1c is 58 so she said I could reverse this diagnosis! if I get my hba1c below 48 and she wants to see my in a month.

I got a new monitor from her cause they never had my test strips to prescribe me. Looked like the monitor was used a few times only . The only thing is that my monitor said 6.8 and new one is 7.7 which do I trust ? I just got the new test strips from the chemist for the slightly second hand monitor.

She said 2 hour and before meals was best time to test not 1 hour past.

Also said that it's best to eat anything sweet like my dark chocolate 1 hour after a meal ... that it's called a diabetic cheat.

Any of this sound weird.?

She said my diabetes wasn't that bad ! At hba1c of 58

Your HbA1c of 58 isn't too bad in the scheme of things. Some on here started double that, but to say you could reverse it if you get down to 48 is wrong. Under 42 is non-diabetic, and you need to maintain it under 42 without meds for quite a while before you can start to believe you may have reversed it.

The general advice is to test before eating and 2 hours after first bite because these are the only timings we have NHS guidance for. Testing at an hour is optional and something some people do to try and catch their peak, but this isn't an exact science because peaks can happen at any time before or after 2 hours depending on the combination of foods eaten.

As for your meters, as you are prescribed strips for one and not the other, keep the one you will get strips for and put the other away for emergencies or whatever. Only use one of them or you will get confused. You will always find discrepancies between meters and between strips using the same meter. It is part of the plan to keep us confused. Just stick to one and look for upward or downward trends without getting hung up on the actual numbers.

That's great thanks I really thought that it was iffy for her to say that I could get rid of it below 48 ! Cause I have pcos she said I may look like I'm a diabetic but not be really . I kinda got confused ! She kept me waiting for aged too ! She wants to weigh me in a month's time I weigh myself all the time lol

Yeah she said my cholesterol is 5.1 and at my age of 32 it should be lower

My HbaC1 on diagnosis was 13 point something in "old money" I think that's about 118, so comparatively speaking 58 isn't bad, but if you jump on the wagon now, you can reduce all your risks (retinopathy, neuropathy, heart problems, etc, etc) If you've been lucky enough to be prescribed a meter & strips use them effectively to find out which foods your body can process without a big BG spike, remember that this is a marathon not a sprint, and although you can put yourself into "remission" the chances are you'll never be "cured" as if you fall off the control wagon your levels will once again start to rise

Hmmm about the chocolate thing - I do agree with her that if you are having a very low carb meal you could have a LITTLE treat for dessert. If you eat it soon after the rest of your meal it will all get 'processed' at the same time and you won't get the same BG reaction as you would if you ate the treat on its own. The only downside is that you will never lose the taste for sweet things if you have them regularly.

True but it's keeping me sane and since it's 70 % dark chocolate with nuts or nut butter it hasn't made me want sugary things because I ditched sugary things a long time ago

Dr can't tell me breakdown of my cholesterol the report didn't say he said !

OK, looks like he was trying to save money by not asking for these to be tested. Some GPs are miserable like that, and very short sighted. Next time you are due more tests, push for these to be tested. They are important, especially if the doctor tries to push statins on you.

Should I get it done private? Also he said my triglycerides are 2 which are top end he said bit explained no further

Blimey, if your doctor knows your triglycerides, he should also know the other lipid breakdown figures. I suggest you phone reception and ask for a proper print out of all your results. Knowledge is Power. Yes, your trigs are top end, but these can come down with less carbs and more omega 3. (oily fish is a great source)

Bit how if it isn't on the system ? He said it wasn't on the report

Whether it is or it isn't on the report, those print outs will serve you well, and in my opinion are 100% essential if you are to control your health. There will be other tests on that report, too, with stuff you need to keep an eye on. You are entitles to have a print out.

Ok ye

Yes I think I will then. Thanks for the suggestion. Would you go private for to find out a cholesterol breakdown in my situation?
