1year old type 1!

Hi everyone

Am looking for advice my little boy who is 1 has been diagnosed with type 1 12 weeks ago but I am so stressed I don't have good control on vet his levels some days he's spiking to 23.0.

When first diagnosed he was 41.8!!
Thai is the hardest thing ever. He is so picky with food and as most kids he was juice like the other kids he was crisps an stuff doesn't want to sit down to a carb controlled healthy meal! Haha

Am trying my best even batch cooking meals an working out all the carbs. But am so worried about these constant highs and also giving corrections all the time. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Crisps are a definite 'no go' with me, I get a crazy spike. Have you tried him with quavers or wotsits? Even monster munch have only 13g carbs, bit easier than 'proper' crisps.
 
Have you spoken with your child's paediatric diabetes team about his bg control, if not I would get in touch with them but keep a detailed diary of all his bg levels, insulin doses and food eaten so that they can advise further.

It can't be easy with a child so young and I really do feel for you @Jaxx13,
 
I can't offer any practical advice at coping with such a young child with T1diabetes. I hope that there will be some people along soon, I see Nigel has tagged someone .
What I wanted to add is that there is a UK email support and discussion group for parents of children with diabetes. They have a facebook page which gives the details https://www.facebook.com/groups/UKCWD/
 
Hi Jaxx,

It must be so stressful for you for so many reasons, especially ensuring your son eats well enough. I hope you're getting plenty of support from his hospital team. They should be able to advise about diet as they'll monitor your son's growth over the years.

It does take a while to get blood sugar levels under control and I'm sure theyve erred on the side of caution with such a young child with the insulin doses.

Have you looked at the Parents section here for support?
 
Wow. A tricky one.

Just a thought on the lower carb replacement for crisp snacks.. (Which won't do the lad no favours.) Cheese or bacon cut into dinosaurs & placed in an empty snack packet as a tempting treat to keep the count down? That sort of thing using a pastry cutter.
 
Wow thank you everyone. Yes were having close contact with the hospital team but have been told specially with little ones it's hard to get there levels under control. Thanks for the hints and tips I'll give them ago, just a long hard learning journey.

On the good side all levels 4-7 to day ))

Great levels there, Jaxx I hope that makes you feel better. I'm sure there'll be ups and downs, but hopefully more positive days as you and your son progress. It does get easier
