Hi all. I was diagnosed a fortnight ago. I've battled through the blurred vision and the headaches and come out on top so far! Today I have been managing to keep my BG really steady and at a good level for the first time which is great, but I find my heart is beating very hard and I feel "heavy", my arms in particular.

Has any one else been through this? I was was running at BG of high 20's before i was diagnosed, and that was for around 8 weeks, so I've been sort of assuming its just my body adjusting to the "normal" BG levels now?

Hi Hale,
When I was diagnosed I was given insulin, a glucose meter and told to get on with it. If I were you I'd look to get as much information as possible. Have a look on Amazon for books. Gary Scheiner's Think Like A Pancreas is a good start.

As for your heart and heavy symptoms it could be your body adjusting, it could be anxiety as I was very anxious after diagnosis. I don't recognise them as diabetes symptoms.

Also get yourself onto a DAFNE course which will teach you how to match insulin with carbs. If you find you're not hitting the 6.5% hba1c target then consider low carbing.

Keep posting questions on here as this place is a great resource.

It probably all seems a bit daunting, but you can control it! Good luck!

Thanks! Im booked on to DAFNE for November. Its the earliest they would agree to let me do it and even then i've had to push for it. I saw someone else has reccommended Thin Like a Pancreas so that is on its way in the next day or so! I don't feel at all anxious about it, I have a cousin who i'm very close to who has had it for years so i've seen it all with her and am just trying to get on with it. But i think I must be worrying about it somewhere in the back of my mind because I woke up in the middle oft he night and discovered I'd been tensing my arms in my sleep! so that would explain the heaviness, they're just trying to recover haha

I'm going to phone my DSN today as I havent spoken to them in about a week and a half and im unsure about the amount of basal im taking. I take it at around the same time as dinner, so my bolus is usually within 30 mins of it too. not sure if that makes a difference? For the last 4 days i've found i've been quite low 2 hours after dinner, around 4 - 4.5. last night in particular i dropped from 6.2 to 4.4 in just 30 minutes. all i was doing was watching the telly! i had 2 digestives to bring it back up as those levels make me feel odd and i dont want to go hypo. but then by bed time, another 3 hours later, i have shot up to 15.7? and then im back at a nice even 6.8 this morning. I cant see any logic in it other than the basal having an effect as I didnt eat anything or take any further insulin!

the mind boggles haha
