3 x triple cheeseburgers... surprising levels after 1/2 hours

Hey everyone,

Have been on the low carb/no bread diet for a few months and just recently been getting back into heavy lifting.

Last night I did a very intense workout and probably didn't eat enough to recover so today I couldn't be bothered cooking and felt off.. so thought i'd order in a Mcdonalds as would give me an opportunity to also see how i'm reacting to bread/carbs after being off them for so long.

I ordered 3 triple cheeseburgers and a zero sugar sprite.

After 40 mins I was still down at 5.7 and at the 2 hour mark 5.6.

I was at 5.5 pre meal.

I would have thought despite the fatty meat and cheese that the bread/sugar and sauces would have caused some kind of spike ? anyone else also had good scores with McD's ?

I don't plan on introducing it regularly as I prefer to have better meals for my weight training but it sure did help today as a pickmeup and to lower my cortisol.

Should I also test a further few times for a late spike or should it be okay ?

I would, yes!
Lots of fat slows down the action of the carbs.

T1's often need to split their insulin dose for meals like that, because the carbs hit slow, dosing all the insulin at once may make us go low first, and then make us go high hours later because then the meal kicks in but the insulin has run out.

I have no idea if my metabolism is anything like yours, but I wouldn't trust a triple cheeseburger until 6 hours after eating.

Good luck!

Did you test a couple more times? What happened?

Hi sorry for late reply I didn't due to it going lower from 1 hour to 2 hour.

I wonder if my intense workouts are possibly being used for recovery before a spike can occur ? this would also need to be the day after a workout as I've tested the day after and not got a spike..

Possible my device and strips are not very good ? I use gluconavi and the strips that are needed for it.

Tonight after a serious workout I decided to try a 12 inch spicy chicken pizza which has the usual cheese and garlic topping along with the chicken and after an hour I'm sat at 5.6.... i'll test again in another hour but i'd be expecting a bit more than that ? or is the cheese content stopping the spike ?
