I was diagnosed 3 years ago with type 2 diabetes (looking back i'm guessing I went undiagnosed for a couple of years at least) I was initially put on 1500mg of metformin a day and told to cut out sugar and eat healthily which according to the list of food that they gave me i did (initially anyway) and only to test once a week, well after a year of fairly nasty side effects from the metformin (probably not helped by the fact after 6 months of it i took a couple of months off cause i got fed up with running to the toilet) my doctor grudgingly took me off the metformin and put me on the glucophage SR now at 2000mg a day as my HABC1 was still 9.2%
Things started to improve side effect wise alas my control didn't, i have been pretty much static since then and if i'm honest the diet they put me on has pretty much gone by the wayside, anyway i had my latest HBAC1 last week and my levels still suck now 9.1% and the nurse had now put me on 100mg of Januvia (and insulin is then next step if this does not work) on top of the glucophage, i've only been on it a few days and so far i've had no side effects from it nor have my levels improved.....I also got a letter from the eye screening saying that there has been some early changes in my eyes though no treatment yet is required.
Then I just found this site and a lot of the information i've read contradicts both what my doctor and nurse have told me, aparently complex carbs ie bread and pasta are not as good for me as i was led to believe so this morning i had my 1st low carb brekkie in the form of a cheese omlette, ok found it a bit wierd cooking eggs at 6am but what the hell i succumbed to a egg and bacon sarnie for lunch as I was stuck in the office today but when i got home my blood was 8.6 which considering i'd been sat in front of a desk for a day is simply amazing (normally i'm out on site and fairly active)
So this is a kind of hello and thank you post all rolled into one, only found this site a couple of days ago but i'm now testing 3-4 times a day and starting to learn what I can and cant eat, 1st trip to the supermarket tomorrow since finding you guys and this time the bread and pasta etc will be staying there
, and hoping I can finally get to the point where I stop hating this disease, though atm I cant say i feel that about the advice my doctor/nurse appear to have given me.
