Hi I’m Rob and been Type 1 injecting for almost 40 yrs. I have been playing it more or less by the book and no real involvement with Diabetes groups – a bit busy with life, study, and family to worry too much about it. Will spare you the gory detail of trying to balance life on 1 shot a day of slow acting insulin (1970s style... phew ..) – I was just thankful to be alive. After a couple of bad hypo’s way back when I first started I decided to go with living with slightly elevated BGs – it has been my reality for an unpredictable and active outdoor life – mountains, climbing, walking, skiing, water sports, and a few years working in the jungles of the Pacific ......
The diabetes professionals (here in NZ) have been a huge help and I’m sure that is a big part of being able to keep the diabetes management in perspective and reasonably under control. And no complications so far – just that HbA1c still a bit high at low 60s.
I have 5 kids that certainly help to keep life balanced. I’ve been very lucky that they and my partner help me deal with the occasional lows and keep me sane.
Having just finished with full time paid work I've decided to get more serious about the next stage and use the technology a bit more – amazing the progress in the last 10 years with multiple injections (I haven’t got into pumps but that might change), meters and apps.
And now with just a few days looking at forums, to see what you are all achieving .... very very impressive. So keen to learn more.
Will be watching with interest and hope I have something to offer too.
Regards
Rob
