Hi everyione - the Boissetarian online again
several weeks since I last posted. To recap - I have had Diabetes2 since 2009; was taking various medication in tablet form. Sugar levels were medium to high. I came across the 5:2 diet also called The Fast Diet and started it in June. Told my GP I was going to follow that diet - he was not happy but did not say no - not that I would have taken any notice if he had. Did for a month, monitoring my blood sugar and blood pressure levels and down to just one tablet - glicalzide. I lost almost 3kg since June and sugar levels were on average not so high. Went back to GP. Told me could not go by these results as it takes a while for the medication to work out of the body - in other words he thought nothing had changed. Hesaid he did not like my diet as I should be eating regular meals at regular times throughout the day, with plenty of fecculants (sorry-carbohydrates) and that I would not be biabetes free on my diet.

He asked if I would conduct a month's test just taking the glicalzide and aprovel (for high blood pressure), and have a blood test at the end of that month. I agreed - but felt he thought my sugars would be out of control because I was not taking all the drugs he had prescribed.

Month was up last Friday. Went back to see him with blood test results. When he read them he let out a wry laugh!!! The HbA1c had dropped from 8.1% to 7.3%!!!!! And I have lost 5kg in total. So I am very happy. I think GP is a bit confused as what I am doing flies in the face of all he has been taught about how one can reduce blood sugars. Also we now have a running machine at home and I do at least 10mins every other day - sometimes more if I feel good.

GP has given me new 3-month prescription for Diamacron and blood pressure tablets only. My normal routine is a 3-monthly blood test and visit to GP, hope I will be able to lose even more weight and get to do more excercise before I see him again.

Am very happy at results and I find the 5:2 diet very easy to follow as I seldom want much to eat during the day, especially when it is so hot here - Southern France - and have always eaten main meal in the evening anyway.

What I have learnt over the last two months is what foods bump up the blood sugar and also what combinations of food does that too. I think I now eat a healthier diet, but still eat the sugary things I like from time to time but not in such great quantities as I used to. I think also I am beginning to feel a lot better in myself - I think it has something to do with taking more exercise as well as the diet.

Just thought I'd let you know the good news

I have recently said that I am not a fan of these sort of diets, but well done you! Not only have you improved your condition, you have also shown your doctor that there is another way for diabetics to live. I wonder if you have made him a convert? if only a little?
