Yesterday and overnight I totalled 5 hypos, all below 3.5 and I just cannot understand why.

I injected my normal 15units of insulatard Sun night.

I wake normally between 4.5 - 5.

I woke 3.4.

So as I was doing school run I ate breakfast, without insulin

I would normally inject a ratio of 1:20

Throughout the day I had 3 more.

I injected 10 units of insulatard last night and woke at 3.30 confused dripping in sweat and tearful.

my husband immediately took my bloods and I was 2.7!

I just don't understand what the heck went wrong.

could I be about to break with a cold or something?

I add that I ate a small smiley face jacket with
prawns and salad for lunch and injected 1 unit of novarapid and for dinner i had a chicken salad with one slice of wholemeal bread but didn't inject any nova as was only 3.1 before I ate!

any ideas please or as anyone had a bad day like that?

today I feel tearful exhausted and got terrible headache

many thanks

Shelley

Shelley,

If it was me, I'd cut back the insulatard again and see if it helps. What are you using to stop the hypo's? Are you testing regularly to see how your BG levels are rising? Do you test before bed?

In my experience, an illness would normally have the opposite effect and send readings high. Have you changed anything else in your routine?

Hi Scardoc,

I always have 3 jelly babies. I was told by my consultant last time to eat 3 and that was sufficient to bring my level back up.

Is that what you would recommend?

On Saturday and Sunday my husband and I completely swapped bedrooms with our daughter, redecorated both rooms and moved all the furniture. But on both days I made sure as was quite physical days that I kept testing my bloods and had a little snack of crackers and a thin slice of cheese with pickle both nights before bed. My bloods stayed between 4.5 to 5.6 so didn't think yesterday was the cause of that. Do you think it may have been?

before bed Sunday night I was 5.4.

after my hypo at 3.30 this morning the jelly babies took me back up to 4.3 after 15 mins

3 JB's would certainly do the trick for me. It's always difficult advising as we're all different but I would want to be higher then 5.4 going to bed. The tricky part is knowing what your levels are doing.

Eg. I often do go to bed with BG between 5 & 6 but I eat around 8pm and I eat a lot of carbs. So, I split my insulin at 8pm and 10pm as I know my levels will spike after I go to bed. It works for me.

If you know your going to bed at 5.4 and your BG level is on the way down from your previous meal then something to eat may help. Toast is good. Search the forums for night time hypos, there was a recent thread on the subject which I'm sure will have lots of good advice. Or cut back your insulin at tea time so it's not as low when you go to bed.

The constantly low readings, and the amounts of insulin you are taking in the original post suggest a cut in your long lasting insulin may help.

If it continues then I'd certainly seek the advice of your diabetes team!

They say increased exercise/activity can have a lowering effect on bg for the following 24 hours, it might just explain all the hypo's you had on the Monday Shelley.

Either way I'd just monitor your bg closely over the next few days and maybe set your alarm for 2am just to check that your bg levels are not falling too low, more than likely Monday was a one-off but if it isn't then decrease your insulatard.

I was told by consultant if the bloods are below 7 to eat 20carb snack before sleep my glargine was reduced from 9units to 6 because of sensitvity & still have to eat between 20/30 carbs and wake up at 5.6 6.5 I did once have 4 hypos in a space of 6 hours, the doctors said it doesn't matter if you personally don't class it as exersize it still has effect eg 'cutting from a school run and going to a shop' instead of just doing a school run, I don't use jelly babies I use lucozade its the probly the fastest thing I've tried for a sugar boost, & I now have a chest infection, usuall high bloods as expected but the half an hour after taking an anti biotic they drop from 13-16 6-7 leaving me with a hypo like feeling so maybe it could be a medication your taking? X

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your replies, and sorry for the delay, I came down with a really heavy cold midweek and have been off my feet with it. Finally feel human today! Which is good as the sun is shining here so can enjoy it before it disappears again!

I will take all your advice on board and thanks again x
