Hi all
I moved to goole from Liverpool at Christmas and have noticed a real drop in my diabetes care - I have noticed that this is a common thing with diabetes (postcode lottery) I was very lucky to live practically next door to a diabetes centre in Liverpool and at my 6 month check I would see my consultant, my nurse and my dietician. In goole I registered at the doctors in January and told them I needed my hba1c as soon as possible as it was due that month and the nurse reassured me that as a be diabetic patient I would be called in soon for a full check..... Nothing happened, I ended up making the appointment myself and it was actually almost a year since my last hba1c. I only saw the nurse. She took no blood as she told me I had to go to the hospital for this and they would send the blood over. She didn't seem to think this was urgent and just told me to go when I had the chance. I asked about a carb counting course as I have only had this condition about 18 months and still feel clueless, would love to low carb as in sure I'm doing everything wrong. She was very blasé and said aw I'm sure it won't be necessary - are your bloods generally in single figures? I told her I had a lot of hypos and also felt hyper at times (very thirsty and I'm always so tired) I haven't tested a often as I'd like as found it hard getting hold of the lancets. I have been known to cut my finger with a kitchen knife! She said the nearest centre for carb counting is at Scunthorpe hospital (that's 40 minute drive away, I don't drive so would have to get a bus that is not regular, takes over an hour and finishes at5pm) apparently just have to wait and see what my bloods are like and the hospital will refer me if they think its necessary. I've not been asked in for a foot test so will have to book that soon too - I know I should take responsibility for my own condition and that's fine I just feel I ha a lot more support in Liverpool and missing it now!!
