So I'm starting a SMP course this afternoon, every Wednesday for the next 7 weeks - 3 hours a time. I'm hoping that I will learn new stuff - although through this forum I feel pretty clued up :) I signed up when newly diagnosed, the last 3 months have seen me make big changes - hoping they don't tell me to eat carbs, that doesn't work for me ;)

Watch this space ....

Well that was an experience ... the tutors deserved a medal.

Maybe due to confidentiality I'm not supposed to talk about it - let's just say once again I was surprised by the complete lack of self ownership some people have with their own health issues. But as I've been told before what do I know ....??

Think I'll just leave my comment at that, I got rather frustrated at times.

I've set my long term goal as "come off medication and manage through diet and exercise", my goal for the next week is to drink less red wine

Mmmm, week 3 ... increasingly frustrated by a couple of others on the course "nothing I can do about this" etc etc - I'm just focusing myself and ignoring their negativity ... :)

And this is one of the problems of labeling someone a Diabetic. I mean if it's part of who you are how much control could you have...

Whereas if it's a behavioural response (albeit an involuntary one) to certain lifestyle choices (not true of everyone) then suddenly there are important choices to be made and with that revelation comes accountability... not everyone's cup of tea mind you ;)

i attended the desmonds coarse last week, could only manage half a day, the first question asked was who can name me a carbohydrate? if only i had never self read 2 books on reversing diabetes or read this forum i may have fitted in. alas the tutor was getting rather irritated when i new the answers to her smug questions. also didnt like the fact that i self tested. people really need to accept that they are responsible for managing their condition. it really was an eye opener. whilst i dont claim to know all the answers ive tried my best to educate myself to manage my condition.

I am awaiting the dates of the X-Pert Course dreading it as I really do not do patience!

All I can say....well done..ignoring somebody can be so tiresome! Are you learning anything new? As something useful for you?

Oh I agree so much with what you are saying. In the course we were talking about managing the relationship with our health professionals - I said we should feel able to challenge them if needed. Another participant said what do you know, you aren't a doctor. Believe me, a bite the tongue moment - he's spent the whole course just been negative about diabetes.

Interesting next week's optional module that I suggested is 'Acknowledging and managing unhelpful emotions' :)

I guess I am learning some things. Is the time input worth it - that would be debatable, but (without been too smug LOL) it's good to know I am doing well on my management and I seem to be doing all the right stuff!

@PenfoldAPD oh for the love of god! I am so not going to this course I will be thrown off on day one! I have already received a tounge lashing from someone on here for refurring to my practice Nurse as a "ridiculous individual". Sorry but she is!

I've been signed up to the local Cambridge DBE (diabetic education) course. It's one 6 hour session and I was going to go with an open mind - not any more...ha ha.

Finished my 7 week course today. Was it worth the time investment, hard to say. I enjoyed the camaraderie though, and over the weeks the negative people cleared out.

Today I was Star Baker, the peanut butter cookies and coconut macaroons went down well.

The interesting thing today was one of the course tutor last week said Type 2's should test themselves. Someone challenged her. Well today she acknowledged she was wrong and if people want to test they should - and acknowledged how things change and health professionals must realise this.

Nice to meet local diabetics and will keep in touch with the nice positive ones :)
