Hello everyone,
I've been visiting this forum just about everyday since I was diagnosed with T2 on 6th March after fasting levels of 6.9 and 9.8 so I thought I should introduce myself.

I'm 63, male, and had a BMI of 25ish and followed a healthy diet but with not a lot of exercise. I was suprised to be diagnosed despite my mother also being a diabetic late in life. Reason for that was I used to test myself on her machine when I felt my blood sugars were low and I felt a bit 'wobbly', normally before lunch. Used to get readings of 2.8 to 2.2 so managed to control that by eating something sweet but later controlled it by having porridge for breakfast etc. My big mistake was I thought that I had the opposite of diabetes as my levels were so low - can you believe it?

Not a lot happened after diagnosis, no glucose tolerance test and no Hba1c to give a benchmark but I was promised an appt with a dietician. So thank goodness I Googled 'diabetes forum' and found all of you. Low carb seemed so sensible so thats the way I went. I did try Fergus's bread but mine turned out a disgusting stodge, I experimented by mixing it with Sainsbury's sunflower bread mix at 40.1% carb but still did not like it so I now have a slice of Burgen 3 or 4 times a week at 11.9gms of carb per slice.

In June I went on the Xpert programme which has been mentioned on this forum and by that time I had a BMI of 23ish. All on the course had diabetes, T1 & T2, with some having had it for several years. Their level of ignorance was terrifying and they just accepted what they were told. The main thrust of the course seemed to be healthy eating and not a diet to lower BG readings.

On week one the cost of strips was mentioned and how testing should be for a purpose. Made sense but the costs they quoted was the full retail price and not what it costs the NHS. Website http://www.ppa.org.uk contains the electronic drug tariff for chemists. Its not an easy site to use but strips are listed under 'Chemical reagents' and are as quoted of this forum as about £13 to £15 for 50. Did you know metformin 500mg has just gone up from 28p for 28 to 33p ?

This has gone on for a bit long now so will close by saying thank you so so much for all the information on this site, it is brilliant and you have put me on the right path despite the best efforts of the NHS. And the really good news is have just had my very first Hb1ac and it is 6.2 Many thanks
