A bit confused

I'm actually posting on behalf of my cousin. He had keytones earlier this week and after phoning the diabetic centre he was told to drink an energy drink to get rid of theses ? Can anyone tell is this would help as I always assumed energy drinks are full of sugar. Has anyone been given the same advice xx

I have not heard of anyone suggesting to have energy drinks specifically when ketones are present, and I don't how see it could possibly help (that is, how the caffeine/taurine/whatever they put in there would help).

If the body's energy requirements cannot be met by glucose (i.e. carbohydrates eaten) then it switches to using other sources, and this results in the release of ketones.*
Having a sugary drink (or a glucose IV if you're in a hospital) - such as an energy drink, but not a diet one - combined with insulin (injected or IV) will therefore get rid of ketones.

* There is debate over whether that's necessarily a bad thing; whilst everyone agrees that diabetic ketoacidocis (DKA) is dangerous there are some that think that ketosis is, in fact, healthier than our regular diet.

Thanks, yeah I was slightly confused as to why they would suggest this as anytime him or I have had them before they've suggested hospital to be put on an iv. I guess it will be something that we will need to bring up with the head of the diabetic centre and ask why they suggested it

If he is on a low-carb diet then ketones are a natural bi-product and assuming good blood glucose control and hydration and nothing to worry about in small concentrations. If he has ketones combined with high blood sugar then this suggests the start of DKA which is dangerous and needs to be treated. As AMBrennan suggests this is treated with insulin and therefore he needs to inject and keep a close watch on his blood glucose to make sure he doesn't hypo.. If you suspect DKA then its always advisable to seek medical assistance.

thanks is not on low carb. he was in hospital receiving treatment when i posted. i really only posted to see if anyone else had be suggested the same thing. his sugard were off the chart registeringon his machine as HI, which is why i thought it was strange to suggest an energy drink as surely this would increse his sugars even more
