A book arrived today

lol ditto I found the same. Just thought ah well I'm in this on my own.

I have ordered my copy of the book. Cant wait to read it. It sounds very interesting. How does it compare to Atkins?

Which one is it that you're reading? I've found Diabetes Solution and Low Carb Solution.......wondered which one to order?

I think that the "Diabetes Solution" is a more comprehensive look at Diabetes, and the "Low Carb Solution" is a more concise book that concentrates mainly on the (very important) diet component.

I haven't read the "Low Carb Solution" but (despite the criticism it gets here) the "Diabetes Solution" is a great book. I realise that parts of it are slightly out of date but, in the context of when he first wrote it, Bernstein is a visionary. He almost singe handedly invented the "low-carb plus testing" regime for diabetics, and as such many of us owe our health to him. I read it when I was first diagnosed, and I must admit I got a bit confused between T1 and T2 things.

I recognise his <30g a day (with no fruit) diet is not easy to follow (and the reason why he gets so much grief on forums like this), but if you can stick to it then your results can be outstanding. After trying a couple of different approaches, and reading every book on the topic I could find, I've come to the conclusion that <30g (with no fruit) is the best possbile diet for a T2 diabetic, as long as you can stick with it.

Once you've finished this, if you want some more insight into why low-carb and ketosis work so well, then I thoroughly recommend the "Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" by Phinney and Volek.

I've had my Dr. Bernstein book since 2003. There are newer editions now. I find it scholarly and use it for checking details and looking things up. I'd not like to be without it.

:shock: Is that to do with Diabetes? My legs between the top of my ankles and knees went hairless,leaving shiny skin with this 'Golden Brown' rash that circles the whole of both legs,particually worse round the top of my ankles,I asked a couple of doctors what it was but neither seemed to know what it was but because it was asymptomatic-it didn't warrant a referral to a Dermo.

The hair loss on lower legs is due to poor circulation. Don't know what the golden brown rash is though.

:shock: :shock: I'm a bit worried now as my lower legs ache a lot when walking,might go see the doc as I have 'Other embarressing' circulation problems too which I still can't face talking to the doc about

I had problems with a knuckle on my right hand which I went to the doc about and we ummed and aarred about RSI (I work with computers) and early arthritis. I even went to the trouble of trying to convert to being left handed. It’s gone now – perhaps it was diet or perhaps it was something that just went away.
I have had big problems with chest pain and burping/belching after meals and when trying to sleep. and this is mentioned on several of the case studies. The doc sent me for endoscopy which is the 2nd worst hospital procedure I’ve ever had, but found nothing. I’ve been on fairly large doses of meds for this for about 3 years, but it’s all but gone now and I’ve just stopped the medication in the last week to see if I can do without it the pills altogether.

Just shocked to see other people have these sorts of problems when my doc has said they're not related.

I can't say I had any of those pre-diabetes, I did lose a considerable amount of weight and had the usual thirst, lethargy and constant trips to the toilet.

It could be Necrobiosis but you normally only lose the hair on the effected skin patch.. It's can be linked to circulation problems hence it's link to diabetes... There's no real treatment unless it flares up and the skins starts breaking, then a steroid cream is usually used to calm it back down again..

As to Bernstein, spends too much time on case studies and the caveman to underpin his theories...

About the only thing I agree, is small numbers theory but not as small as he goes, you've really got to find your own levels for this..
