I've found this forum a god send and really appreciate all the feedback from my first posts and the feedback to other posts.

Bit of background:

I was diagnosed with Diabites 5 weeks ago, with a first H1AC score of 52 and a 2nd 10 H1AC score of 49 days later.

Since then I've followed a low carb diet and exercised daily with a combination of rowing, running and weights for an hour. I've managed to lose 2 1/2 stone (down to 15, from 17.5).

I haven't taken any medication for diabetes. My range is 5.0-5.5 pre food, 6.0-7.0 1 hour and 2 hour post food. 5.0-5.5 before bed. 6.0-6.5 first blood sugar.

I refused medication for Diabetes, but do take blood pressure medication.

My questions are:

1> I was a bit surprised the last few mornings when I checked my blood pressure and it was 155/90, I'd expected it to drop with all the healthy living. Has anyone seen an increase in Blood Pressure through a LC diet or weight loss. I'm going to check at a few random points over the weekend, then probably book a doctors appointment if its still high.

2> I'm due to go to Dublin over Easter and want to indulge. Does anyone have experience of going t back to carbs/drinking Guinness. Will I have a short term spike, or will it knock the progress I've made back?

3> Has anyone used fasting, to control diabetes. Whilst all my numbers are in range, I've never seen a 4 (apart from 5.4,6.4,7.4,8.4)

Any help much appreciated.

My answers are

1. My BP has risen while low carbing but it might well have risen anyway, whose to know. I wouldn't worry about one BP test but do take care and see your GP. I take my BP (as advised by my doctor two times a day twice a week - so Tuesday 8am and 8pm and Friday 8am and 8pm. If there is an increase happening you will see it in the pattern over a couple of weeks.

2. If I eat something not low carb (and I eat a very low carb diet) then I get a knock on affect over the next three days. As long as I am strict with myself my BGs are back to normal by day four.

3. Yes, I've used fasting to control diabetes. It certainly worked in the beginning and my BG came down to 4s and 5s. The problem (for me) began when I think I did it too much. Its worth a try, just be aware that your body can adjust .... well, mine did.... and fasting stopped working as a diabetes control method. However, I do enjoy fasting - never thought I'd say that - so I do intend to go back to it once my body has gotten used to having three meals a day again - but maybe only do it once possibly twice a week.

Took my blood pressure last week for the first time in ages and it was 115/75.
Its is usually something like 150/90 and the doc made we wear a 24 hour monitor as he thought it was high. Discovered I have mild white coat syndrome.
So it has taken nearly 18 months of very low carb to bring mine down but it has happened..

Re fasting - Yes I fast every day (skip breakfast) and have just started a 47-1 fasting regime.. not eating for 47 hours then eating within a 1 hour window. Helps with weight loss and lowers BS. I usually get 4's when fasting going up to just over 5 after a virtually carb free meal.
