I have put myself on the Mediterranean diet to help bring my levels down so that I can come off medication. By doing this I have had to include a few good carbs otherwise it makes me feel hungry. Questions......how often should I have carbs? How often can you have a naughty treat like cake or white bread? When shopping what is a good carb and sugar levels per 100g to look for for a diebetic?

Thank you

Hi and welcome. :)

I will tag @Galja for a true perspective of what a real Mediterranean diet is. Which is a little different from the one usually touted in the press. lol.

Re your hunger: Food is made up of fats, carbs and proteins. If you cut the carbs down, to maintain good blood glucose, but end up hungry, then you need to increase the fats and proteins to compensate. Since both fats and proteins are more satisfying and slower to digest than carbs, that should keep you feeling fuller and keep your blood glucose on an even keel.

Re the occasional carby treat - it all depends on how well your body tolerates carbs. Do you have a blood glucose meter to test and see what happens to it when have a treat? I did this and quickly learned to judge exactly how many squares of dark choc I could tolerate. :D

Search the forum for codefree meter - there are discount codes to get the test strips cheaper too - it's all on here somewhere.

Some foods will have a gradual increase affect on your bloods, others will peak more quickly - and testing will show you which foods are best for you, test before eating and 2 hrs after to get an idea of the 'spike' - you can also do intensive testing every 30mins or so post meal to get a real idea of how your BG levels are doing.
