Hello,

I'm researching towards my A Level exam which takes place on the 5th, 6th and 7th of May 2015. (10 days aahh!) I was wondering if anyone, or a few people here could talk me through their process of being diagnosed with Diabetes type 1.

Did you go to your GP?
What tests did he/she do?
Did he/she then refer you?
Where were you referred?
Were there anymore tests?

Just little questions like that.

Obviously you do not have to answer any questions you feel uncomfortable with (just leave those out or skip to the next one if you can)
Any information you think is relatable to the example questions I've just put would honestly be so so helpful!

Thankyou, Coren.

1) Yes.
2) Urine test to check for glucose.
3) Yes.
4) Admitted to hospital 3 days later.
5) Yes

Good luck with your studies Coren.

1) What was the name of the ward were you referred to?
2) What other tests were done after the urine test and after being referred?

Thank you

It was just a general ward, not sure what all the tests were as it was a long time ago and I never bothered to ask.

1) No, I was quite unwell and phoned the out of hours Drs who then visited me at home.
2) The Dr did a finger pricked blood test and also checked my urine for ketones
3) No, he phoned an ambulance
4) The ambulance took me straight to hospital
5) In hospital, they repeated the blood test and also did the usual pulse, heart rate, blood pressure tests, etc

1/ Yes.
2/ Took blood sample.
3/ Sent to hospital AMU next day and started insulin immediately.
4/ As 3 above.
5/ No.

I went to the optician as my previously 20 20 vision was at that point pretty terrible. The optician told me to visit my doctor.
He then referred me for a blood test.
They contacted me the same day with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
The next day they called me again as they decided that I was type 1 and that they has a bed in my local hospital waiting for me.
I spent 3 days in hospital on a sliding scale of insulin.
I can't remember if there were other tests at the time of diagnosis.

1. Yes
2. Finger blood test and a syringe full !
3. Yes
4. To hospital endocrinology dept.
5. No. It was obvious I was diabetic.

Best of luck.
