Yes he will get free prescriptions as a diabetic on meds
However still has to be prescribed them to receive them he is only prescribed 50 a month
any more he pays for them not wishing to rock the boat

Unbeliever

Well said good post

Duh! I've been getting free prescriptions for 36 years because of diabetes and there I go only thinking of him being over 60.  But 50 a month is just stupid. I guess it's time for a riot. I think I said earlier that more testing now means less medical care later so is surely much cheaper than restricting strips.

I'm going to be a little controversial here. From the point of a type 2, I feel that the newly diagnosed need strips to find out what foods work for them and what don't. After 3 - 6 months I'm not sure what the value is of testing several times a day, surely you know what foods you can tolerate and what you can't. It's a lot of money to spend unnecessarily.

I rarely test these days and have maintained a Hba1c of low 5s for years. If my Hba1c suddenly shoots up I'll get some more strips and test but whilst everything is stable and non progressive then I don't see the point. The key is taking control of your diet, if you do that you don't need the test strips and if you don't, can't or won't I don't see what good they are going to do anyway.

For type 1s obviously strips are a necessity.
I tend to agree here with Hobnoblin. In the first 6 months we all need to learn to 'eat to our meters'. But once we know what certain foods do the 'need' is lessened. Now my personality type too Type A to ever go donw to a couple times a day only. So after two years I'm still at least a 5-6x a day.. Before each mean and 2 hours after each meal. That's what I'd call the minimum per day to 'never get surprised' at your next HbA1c test. If you're ok with a potential surprise and only want to check a couple times a day -- then check upon waking and 2 hours after dinner or before bedtime.. That would be the absolute minimum I would think anyone would want to do. But we all have different goals. I understand that.
