A minor foot injury.

On Wednesday morning I caught my left foot in the shower door, scraping some skin off and causing it to bleed. The minor injury was just above the heel and below the ankle. I made sure that I kept the area as clean and dry as possible.

I don't wear sandals since my diagnosis, but I noticed last night when I removed my shoe, the area was weeping (The area is just inside the heel of my shoe and it may have rubbed when I walked).
I cleaned the area very carefully and covered it with a breathable plaster.

Today the injury site is a little larger and deeper, it is not bleeding, but it looks like it is ulcerating, with a thick discharge and getting very sore, there is no swelling or redness as yet in this area.

I am not at home at the moment as I am on a week’s holiday in Wales.
Should I continue to keep the area clean and dry as possible?
Should I use any type of dressing on the area?
Or should I seek some medical assistance, as it is a bank holiday weekend, and I will not be able to access my Dr's surgery until Tuesday am.

Go to nearest Pharmacy and ask advice. Get antiseptic and thicker dressing and pad so shoes don't rub. See your doctor asap or, if you think it is bad enough, a local A & E.

Thanks Sue,

I will see if there is a chemist open nearby tonight, if not I will go first thing tomorrow morning.

I shall certainly get it checked on Tuesday.

If you mix some salt with boiling water and allow it to cool, it's a very good all purpose antiseptic. Anything dies if you put enough salt on it, so it'll deal with any bacteria on the wound. A lot of the time this works better than dettol style antiseptics. Worth a try if you haven't been to the chemist yet.

I did go to the chemist, and he advised me to keep the area as dry and clean as possible without covering up the area.
So I went out and bought some footglove sandals from M&S that had no back or back strap.

They are very comfortable and have allowed the ulcer to stay dry and begin to heal.

The area is still a little tender, but it has now scabbed over.
I will phone my surgery tomorrow and try to speak with my DN to see what he advises about the care of the ulcer.
