If you are referring to the singer, of course it is not his real name. However there is another of the same name in history of I think music!

Fremont. John C (Union General, U.S.civil war)

Yes, I was referring to the 1960s singer and yes I know it wasn't his real name - it just used to amuse me ; unfortunately I wasn't really a big fan in spite of his talent - and youthful sexy looks..

for a talented voice, the choice of songs for him was awful!

Harper's Ferry.

where John Brown failed to raise an army in his cause for banning slavery. (Pre US civil war)

I heard of John Brown from very early childhood. We used to have a song when we had colds in the wintertime:

John Brown's baby had a cold upon its chest
John Brown's baby had a cold upon its chest
John Brown's baby had a cold upon its chest
And he rubbed it with camphorated oil

H ... I ...

Ichabod Crane

I knew (part of) another version:
John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave
John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave
John Brown's body lies a-moldering in the grave
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
Glory, Glory, Hallelujah
His soul goes marching on...

And since we've reached J now , who else but the man himself:

John Brown

I learned that version later; I think the first one was the children's adapted version!

I knew of this version, not the other.
The John Brown was executed for treason after Harper's Ferry. The strange thing about the incident was the general who put down the insurrection was no other than Robert E Lee. He was still in the union army then. He changed and chose the confederate army when war broke out.

Longstreet. General confederate army. (U.S.civil war)

Dr Mary Edwards Walker (first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War}

Quantrill. William.

His raiders in the civil included Jesse James and his brother Frank James.
