Finally my doctor thinks that the way I'm eating - no more than 50 grams of carbs a day is good. When I first went low carb he sighed and said that as I'd lost 4 stone before by eating low calorie, why didn't I do that again. You see I'd put the weight back on because it's difficult to live on a low calorie diet. I lost the weight and went back to eating smaller portions but a normal low fat diet.
So far I've lost 21 or so kilos - nothing since Xmas because I've been letting my carbs slip upwards a little - but nothing back on again. My bg has come down - as has my dress size. When I lost on low calorie I went down 2 dress sizes in 4 stone. On this low carb I've already gone down 4 dress sizes.
The doctor was also unhappy that DH and I had both come off our statins, but since he's taken more note of patients who are healthy but with fairly high cholesterol - he told me not to worry after he'd seen an 89 yr old woman, fit as a flea with a total cholesterol of 8.9%. I pointed him to read some of the online cholesterol sites and he's more confident now with people not taking their statins.
So all in all - I'm happy that my doctor is now behind me in a supportive way, rather than to give me a kick up the backside.
And thanks too to viviennem without her Modified Atkins diet I wouldn't have started this journey. She led me (inadvertently) to reading Atkins, Barry Groves, Gary Taubes and others.
Plus the recipes on this site are amazing too. Thanks to the people who have shared them.
Off to see my dad in hospital now. A type 2 diabetic that never changed anything for his diabetes. He now has - double heart failure, dodgy kidneys, and lots of other things wrong with him. I don't want to follow in his footsteps when it comes to diabetes.
