Abbreviations

Often on the forum people will use abbreviations for certain things and this may be confusing to new members who are not aware of what they mean. Even some of us regular members may not understand some of them Today in message I have found two that I don't understand one is MDI the other is OGGT. To help people wouldn't it be better to use the proper words rather than an abbreviation. I think I remember this being raised before on here
 

I wonder if one of the admins/members with broad knowledge could start a thread with all the main culprits AND include it in that first message Daisy sends.

Thoughts?

I believe that one of our mods did one a while ago. Andy I think!
OGTT is what you're referring to is oral glucose tolerance test.
MDI not sure!

Yes I think GTT is what the OP probably meant but even that a lot of people would not know what it was....MDI I now think is Multiple Diabetes Injections. Often people will also make up their own abbreviations of things assuming everyone with diabetes will know what they are
 
MDI = Multiple Daily Injections - ah just as I was looking if there was a sticky some Moderator wades in with the low down!
 
I think that @Pinkorchid's point is that we shouldn't be using abbreviations unless we have a reasonable expectation that the person will know what we are talking about. Especially if we are addressing a new poster.

It is very easy to type out OGTT, because we can't be bothered to type out Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, but it just makes the post impenetrable to a new poster who is struggling with so many other ideas and terms.

Personally, I try and avoid them or at least explain what they are - but being human, I forget sometimes.
 
I agree with @Brunneria I see so may posts to brand new newbies where people say "I follow a LCHF diet". That means nothing to most new arrivals. It is a matter of common sense.

Well I see what you are all saying but when I was new I googled the abbreviations if I didn't know what they meant. It isn't that hard to find them. MDI was more difficult, so I put in 'MDI diabetes' and got the answer.
