Abnormal readings

Hi All,

I haven't been diagnosed as yet, i had a fasting blood glucose reading of 6.7 so the Dr sent me for a GTT today and my fasting reading was 7.3. They wouldnt do a prick test after the two hours as they said they arent allowed to give results so i've got an appointment booked for next friday to get the results (if they are back by then).

My readings are higher than normal, I'm about 3 and a half stone overweight and my nan had diabetes, as does my uncle. My mum also had gestational diabetes (not sure if that was with me or one of my sisters). I MOSTLY low carb anyway, which i'm starting to think is what may have prevented it all being worse than it is.

I'm annoyed that i didnt get a result today, as this has been going on for a good few weeks now and i thought that i'd get the 2nd reading and would have an idea of where i am.

but, basically, I'd like to get a blood tester and strips and test it myself until next week. is this a bad idea?

You have just got to be patient and wait for the results, I know it's hard but the doc. needs to weigh up all the test results and make a decisision.

In my book if your readings are not normal then you are diabetic, some doctors will decide that if your results are a only a bit not normal then you are pre-diabetic, or put another way, maybe a bit diabetic.

As I said, I think you either are or are not, no faffing around with areas of grey and indecision.

But then I am not a doctor, so I can afford to stick my neck out and have a guess that you will be found to be diabetic but it will not be very bad and probably treatable with diet and excercise.

Don't forget to let us know how things turn out, we do care :)
