Hello, I would like to be able to monitor my BGL, All the ones on amazon have very varied reviews about accuracy. Can anyone recommend me one?
I am wrapping my head around The Blood Sugar Diet.

Thanks

The most accurate meter I have ever tested is the Freestyle Freedom Lite but unfortunately the test strips can be eye wateringly expensive.

A cheaper way to go is to buy a meter, learn in which way it is inaccurate and allow for it.

Lots of people here seem to use the SD code free meter. The test strips are very reasonably priced too. Another alternative I think is the Tee2? I think it's called. Research a few before you decide.

Thanks, sounds complex......how do I know which way it is inaccurate? wouldn't I need an accurate one to test it against?

No meter is 100% accurate. All meters have to reach the same ISO standards before they can be marketed, which in simple terms is plus or minus 15%. You take your pick, but do be aware that it isn't the cost of the meter that is important (some are given away for free) it is the cost of test strips that is important, and they vary from around £7.50 for 50 to nearly £30 for 50..

The way I know is I test them on an 0.05% dextrose solution but I won't get into the complications. Just buy a cheap one and know that it will read a little high. There would be the consideration that it might tell you that you are not in a hypo when in fact you are but if you are a T2 you are unlikely to hypo. Just find out what spikes you and fix it.

Hi @goo_goo and welcome to the forum. I use an Accu Chek Mobile which I find to be fairly consistent and seems to be as accurate as any BG meter is likely to be. It does probably give slightly lower readings. It has good reviews from Amazon users.
They are around £23 online, but ASDA pharmacy were selling them for £17. But the test cartridges do cost around £20-25 (50 tests), so fairly dear at about 40-50p a test.
I also use a TEE2 which is free, and the test strips cost £7.50 for 50, so only 15p a time. It's not so accurate, and can differ by + or - 0.5 mmol/L from my Accu Chek. But it will five you a reasonable idea of your bs levels, at a cheaper cost.

Thanks everyone, with your help I am getting the sd codefree. A step closer to the (scary) blood sugar diet. Can I really live on 800 calories?
